A wading pool is a pretty good idea if you have the space and dont mind another thing to maintain, I am lucky I have a huge grapvine all the dogs can get under, I went under it one day and found it is suprisingly cool in there, and of course we been refreshing the water like every 2 hours and putting ice in it to keep it cool longer. But if you dont have a shady area or wading pools you might just have to bring them in in the hottest moments of the day, I havent yet but will if I see any showing bad effects from the heat.

Proper feed and water...no reason you can't leave them outside, much along work them. I work my in the summer, if they can't handle a 100 degree day I don't need them. These are working dogs, if you give them what they need, heat is no problem for them. I see no reason why a person can workexercise in the heat all day long, yet people want to make excuses for why their dogs can't!

If you have a freezer chest you can freeze up ice in small cleaning buckets and dump the ice into your dogs water dish. You can also wrap it in burlap and put it in the dogs' houses, cover it in straw and it'll last most of the day.
I guess the excuses come from people who lost dogs in heat and didnt see a problem with their provided elements.yeah i never lost a dog to the heat but i would rather take 5 minutes out of my time and take my dog inside rather then taking that chance of him to die.

well ill feel his water with ice when he doesnt come in. But here today it got up to 110 whe i went outside for 5 mins i was drenched in sweat.

same here, my dogs take it well though, barely pant, but theres always a variable and I think sometimes a dog that works its chain all day or is super active towards others or whatever could succumb to heat, it isnt as easy as saying proper feed and water are the only thing they need on a hot day.

well I know here in arizona if a dog is to get short chained and cant get to his water or shade the dog aint gonna make it !
21 people have died here this summer already
WoW just imagine how hot that chain gets though and if a dog sit's on it thats a nice burn haha i guess if they do it once they learn.

I have trees everywhere. Every outside dog I own is under the shade. These guys dig a whole and lay in it. My boys refresh the water every morning. The dogs in kennels do the same. That's it.

I live on the Beach of Central Florida where it feels like it's 115 degrees outside every day and most of the days it's extrmely humid. Lots of water and we swim our dogs pretty much every day or hose them down after a nice workout to cool them down..but my dogs stay in their own kennels inside, but are outside most of the day working out. they actually like the heat, they go out and lie right in the sun for hours on end...once in awhile getting up under the shade trees and most important, they get plenty of water!
dude i would love to live on the beach. what does your dogs do when they get salt water in there mouth.

Well if it is too hot then it would be best to bring them in the house. But if the weather is nice then let them play.

The APBT are known to be sensitive to heat. It is a breed issue. Some breeds are better suited for hot conditions (i.e. Filas) and others are not. I guess if you, Txsbulldogs, keep them wet while they work, they are ok. I am a wuzz for hot environments. I could not last a day working in the heat but under freezing temperatures, I can stay out all day! Same with our breed.

“it isnt as easy as saying proper feed and water are the only thing they need on a hot day.”
You’re right, shade and a house also…but them things are common sense items. Proper feed and water intake is the key, though.

How did you come to that conclusion?
“guess if you, Txsbulldogs, keep them wet while they work, they are ok.”
Please tell me that was a “joke”? Why would you have to keep the wet while working them? They can and will adjust, just like us humans do! A dog would be useless if you had to keep a hose handy in the summer for him while he was working or only able to exercise them in the cooler weather.

My dogs are mostly house dogs, but when they are outside they have a large bowl with water and a small swimming pool. Explain to me how a dog that hates getting a bath LOVES to swim in a pool!! Regardless they spend really hot days in the AC in front of a fan. Aren't they spoiled? Hey, I figure if I'm sweating my @ss off and would rather be swimming or in the AC, they might want too also. :)
I Use A Kiddy Pool Lots Of Water And Shade.

I agree with Texasbulldogs. These dogs can take the heat very well, granted they are not some kind of super dog, but they do stand up to the heat better than a lot of other breeds.

The statement about these dogs not being able to take the heat is just not true.. Airlines and vets list these dogs as a Brachycephalic(short nosed) breed, which is false. A brachycephalic breed is dogs such as English bulldogs, pugs, boxers, french bulldogs etc....All of the "pushed in face" breeds.Im not sure why any one ever put the APBT in this category. AS long as the dog has suffecient shade and cool water through out the day, they should be fine. All though an overly obese dog will have a harder time cooling rather than a lean dog would. Always make sure there is nothing the dogs chain could wrap around or get caught on that could prevent the dog reaching shade or water. Other than that the dog should be fine.

To respond the top red statement since I made it, I agree thanks for clarifying, I thought of course you knew those other 2 items were given and figured they didnt need mentioned...the other 2 statements are retarded, APBTs are not heat "sensitive" or ever should you work your dog while wetting him, how are you going to raise his body temp and work of fat or add wind if you keep him cool,...duh. OK anyhow, just clarifying...

I am glad to have this "wrong" statement corrected by family. In my readings (don't recall the books and sites at the moment), it clearly states the APBT ill prepared to live in a hot and human environment. In addition, it specified that working them in direct sunlight (in the summers) will debilitate them. The sources gave the Fila as better suited to live and work under these circumstances. It also recommends working APBTs in the early part of the day or after sunset. I exercise my dog at or after sunset.
Again, I am glad to have been corrected by family. Otherwise, I would feel like a stomped roach. lol

Although the pitbull can tolerate heat better then most breeds they still can over heat and die especially when working them very hard in hot conditions. Also dogs have no sweat glands and needs to pant to cool off. Remember these dogs are not machines they are flesh and blood and can die like any other living creature. When Im working my dogs in very hot weather when I see them start to over heat I immediatly let them drink water and pour water over there entire body to cool them off.
