Nashua, NH -- I read the article on the “pit bull ban” in effect in Denver with outrage (July 21, Page 9).

The “pit bull” is a media-created monster, not a breed at all. Pit bull is a term used to cover three separate breeds: the American pit bull terrier, the Staffordshire bull terrier and the American Staffordshire terrier.

According to the American Temperament Test Society’s results for last year, these targeted breeds achieved a combined passing temperament score of 86.6 percent, higher than the golden retriever at 83.6 percent.

The “pit bulls” being confiscated in Denver are the ones belonging to the law-abiding citizens who had them licensed.

Do you really think that the drug dealers and dog fighters who train their dogs to be vicious have licensed them?

Any breed can bite, thus breed-specific legislation (BSL) protects no one. The people who own dogs that are allowed to run loose and attack people and/or other animals are the ones who should be punished.

My dogs, both Chihuahuas and bully breeds, are licensed but they are also never outside unleashed.

I have a huge fenced area on my property and that is where my dogs get their exercise.

I also walk them on leash. Leash laws can actually solve the problem of biting dogs, if they are enforced, and the people who let their dogs run “free” are fined or lose the privilege of owning a dog.

Breed-specific legislation is a very dangerous thing. Today, it’s “pit bulls,” tomorrow what – rotties, shepherds, Akitas?

For people who say it can’t happen here, it can. Please go to www.fullybully.com or www.mydogvotes.com, and learn how to fight breed-specific legislation before it’s too late.
