The way some of us bully lover express our affection would and does look mighty negitive to the non-bully community. This would include the legislators who may decide to remove our right to oun our dog of choice. Bite hard and shake, forget the gun beware of my pit. T-shirts depicting mean and vicious acts and bloody mouthed dogs. To some they may be cool but to others it is the truth they wish to believe about the breed. It is bad enough that we have to fight the press and ignorant law makers without the owners of such a wonderful breed trying to cut the heads off of their own and mine and your dogs, just to be cool. Lets think a little further down the road than the end of our privates and set a positive image of the most impressive breed to ever bless the face of the earth.

good post. It was put together well. We are very proud to own these wonderful animals and should really about creating the most positive image for them. Since it seems that the image out there is not at all positive we need to do our part in bettering it.

Circlekpits, I agree but how do we reach even the people that visit this forum. The last time I was allowed in here they said I was to controversal and banned me from the site. No it was not for this tread or one like it, it was because I was willing to bring up the fact that some in here still are willing to defend "scratching" there dogs or worse just to be sure they are good breeding stock. I and my wife have been fighting for the bullies for some time locally and on a legislative level and will be involved in the rehashing of HB78 in Ga again next week. My wife is the GA/Al representitive of the ACF, American Canine Foundation. We and citizens of Lanett, Al have filed a suit against the city based on the constitutional improprieties of their BSL. It is my understanding that this case may go federal and has the ability to completely eleminate BSL across the country. WoW if it works that would be great but only for a short while. Lawyers have a way of finding loop holes. But this brings me back to the owners, if they or we do not actively do something to change the image that the media has designed then it will be only a short period of time before the BSL in a different form rears it demonic head. So how do you reach the mass of the country if even in here people would rather just "bite hard and shake".

Lead by example as you are doing.
" go and show them their fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector."

-Jesus (Matthew ch.18 vs.15-18)

Here's another good way to promote responsible ownership and get these wonderful animlas out in the public eye.

I know here we have started a UKC club. Right now we are planning fun shows for the time being. Since we have just started the club about 6 or 7 months ago we are still not that well know around here yet. But I do believe in time we will be. After we get all the organization setup completely and get some more club members it should take off and become a host for dogs shows in our area. Hopefully we can grow and have a lot of people show and see what our dogs can do. You can do what you can in your area to make the image better to start with and hope that continues throughout.

Thanks to you folks for a response. What we are doing here in our area is starting a drill team of bullies and other breeds for educational programs. I have a red nose that is a Delta certified pet therapy partner. We go to elementry schools for bite prevention classes and to high schools for spay/neuter and role playing. They have to run shelters and learn the realities of over populations. I take my dogs into public so that the kids and adults alike can pet them and get licked by the big bad pits. Most dont even know what they are until after the licking and then show no fear. But there are some that will cross the street to avoid a good licking. I wear and my dog wears nuetal attire nothing that would say bad owner or bad dog. No spiked collars, no t-shirts with a bloody dog on it. My dogs are happy and I act that way when in public, even I had rather be kicking some of the people for their stupid comments. The shows sound good just take the precautions that the bone heads dont come in and ruin it for you. I know that here in GA they had the first Ga APBT get together in Macon, Ga some time back. It sounded like a good idea but from the reports I recieved by some who attended( I was not there ) it was more testostaron than fellowship of dog lovers. I repeat this is what I "heard". If this is true, and I dont know if it is, this is not good for public opinion. I hate to think that the bullies I own now "6" may be the last I ever own. But if we cannot change the minds of the ignorant and this includes non owners and some owners I fear we or our pets are lost. I thank you for your willingness to do something positive instead of just typing like so many do.

Unfortunately there are a few that try to ruin it for all, to be honest with you it was the "big bully" owners at that show that have to much testosterone going on. They are the ones that show up in the t-shirts and with spiked collars and harness'. This was a first show and it takes time for those that do that kind of thing to realize they are not wanted or needed at these events. I personally was there and felt that for a first it went very smoothly. It will be a great tool in our fight against BSl as it gets our dog out in public for all the world to see. We take much time and effort socializing our dogs correctly so that it is possible for anyone to see that these are not the vicious animals the media portrays them to be. We hope to have a good turn out at the August show and lots of positive press for these dogs.
