Marty I have a male that licks his steel food bowl the same way! Not down inside where the food goes but the bottom of the bowl. I gave him k9 redcell thinking he was lacking something but he still does it. They got they own thing going on I guess!

Nothin! I feed it and have great looking and great acting dogs with good stools. I am curious as to why this dog is eating dirt.

Diamond makes your dogs have good stools??? OMG your nose must be broke..diamond makes the dogs stool smell like death in an oven...LOL A freind of mine feeds diamond and I hate even going over there..they keep their yard very clean but when one goes you can smell it across the yard..lol..i think diamond also makes the coat look poor...JMO ...to each their own..what ever works for you
It really all depends on the dog, each dog is different. Diamond may do good for a lot of dogs, but some dogs may not do as well on it, just as every other dog food available on the market (some more or less than others).

LMAO....I mean the stools are hard. You are right about the smell. I don't have as bad a problem with the smell. I also feed fresh eggs and meat. ROFL!

Hey Marty your lucky....sisters mastiff licks cement walls and floors, actually anything. She literally licked a hole in the plywood floor before carper was laid in two rooms....she will lick the cement walls in the unfinished basement and bite off jagged cement rocks to eat them, and her favorite hobby when outside is to shovel up as much gravel to swallow as possible....this girls nuts. She obviously cries while passing these items but still does it if you arent on top of her all the time. Doctor thought she had bladder stones when he felt her stomach because she litterally had a stomach FULL of gravel that she couldnt pass as a puppy. Kind of off on a tangent but Marty, you got it lucky with just dirt!

It happens with horses a lot also, Marty. They lick the dirt for the salt and trace minerals.Go to the local feedstore and get her a mineral block.Just the small one.Put it out and see if she takes to it.I had to do that for a male we had a while back. It's not good to feed redcell to a dog everyday.not even very often. If the iron intake is too high it can be very dangerous.I'll pull up my articles later and post them.Hopefully this will help her out.Taking in too much dirt and sand can bind her intestines and be the cause for various issues, such as torsion.(Twisted gut) which in most cases is fatal. This exact thing happened to one of our local K9's.And he hadn't even been worked in a few days.

Acording to my kids" God made dirt and dirt don't hurt, just take it in and let it work." All kidding aside I would think some sort or mineral lacking in her diet.

Great job Whiskey (again ;).
Sorry, this gal's been at work all day. Whiskey has hit the nail on the head I think. Just a few more questions.....Is she the only one that does this? How long has she been doing this (that you've noticed)? Have you changed anything in their diets?

When my dog was a pup he was eating ground and liked it very well. When I let him lose on a field he will spot some ground to eat and go after that. He was totaly crazy about it. Now a days he doesn't do this any more.

marty, did you try the mineral block if so did it work? just curious.
didn't read the whole thread, i.e., postings, but I'd say she's trying to compensate for the lack of minerals she's not obtaining. Not too uncommon. Perhaps you can impliment a supplement to her diet?....

Anemia?
My dog licks my hardwood floors. I discovered he licked areas that ants had hidden in. Any chance it's something simple like she likes grubs, lol?
I guess pancreatitis can also cause this, as can other g.i. disturbances, but they're not as common as anemia.

maybe just maybe its salt especially if she does it more in the summer. as she dehydrates she would get back the water from her bowl but not the salt.
