I don't know what I'm going to do. Cowboy was a pup I got custody of after his owner left him at our clinic & never came back to get him. He was only 5 weeks old & so badly malnourished his front legs were extremely bowed out & knuckled over that he couldn't even stand. The pup was also dehydrated & cold (as the owner was leaving him out in the 40 degree rain). Anyways, I brought Cowboy home & nursed hime back to health. My "adoptive" little brother was looking for a dog & always wanted an APBT (as he helped me with mine). I neutered the pup then gave him to Sonny to take care of. They were perfect together. Sonny is a great kid (he's 21) with lots of energy; very much the athlete. Cowboy was a homely looking pup with a ton of love to give & an activity level out of this world. Today, Sonny had to run an errand & it's a beautiful day so he decided to leave Cowboy out in the backyard. He made sure he had a big bowl of water & some toys to keep him occupied. He was only gone a few hours. When he got home he noticed Cowboy didn't greet him at the backdoor. he saw him laying in the middle of the yard not moving. He panicked & called me at work. I left & went to his house. What we did find was some leftovers it looked like that looked to have been thrown from the neighbors yard (there is an 8 ft privacy fence in the backyard). The problem is the neighbors hated the fact that Sonny now had a pit bull. I brought Cowboy's body up to the clinic & we will be doing a necropsy on him later tonight once the clinic is closed. I just can't do it now. I don't even know if I can do it at all..............

Why, oh why, do people have to be so damn cold hearted? I don't understand it......I don't think I ever will..........

Cowboy was born January 28th & died today June 9th. He was just a pup......

Most the times people who kill a dog will just get a fine to pay, maybe some cummunity service.... if someone killed 1 of my dogs I would do the punishing, and it would be fair!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG, Mia. Talk about having it rough...

If the pup was poisoned, it's going to be hard to prove the neighbors did it:(

I am new to the site, but I am soooo sorry. I can't even imagine if something like this happened to my dogs. It is sad that some people have no heart. What did Cowboy ever do to them??? So sad. My thoughts are with you and Sonny. :(

What I've found out from Sonny & his neighbor is that the neighbor has just recently gained custody of her kids whom she lost due to drug & alcohol addiction. She told 2 other neighbor (one who owns a Rottie that she doesn't seem to know about) that there wil be no pit bulls living in the neighborhood with her kids. This was said this past Sat. night & both people witnessed it. Upon hearing/seeing what happened to Cowboy, Sonny's immediate (next door) neighbor told him what was said. He just contacted the other guy to verify the story.

Unfortunately, doing the necropsy won't tell us what kind of toxin he died from, but it can tell us what he DIDN"T die from...i.e. heat exhaustion/stroke, dehydration, starvation, heart abnormality, etc.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who turns out to be a E.B.R.P. Sherriff (didn't know that till my mom called me). He said that even though we probably can't prove enough to make a case against the neighbor, we can definitely make her life hell & possibly get enough on her to revoke the child custody decision (as there are several neighbors who said the woman has been leaving her children alone for long periods of time during the day & night over the past week. the children have gone to neighbors houses looking for their mom). Sonny is now calling Animal Control, although we already have an idea that they will tell us that nothing can be done without proof.
To have the dog tested for certain toxins, I would have to send his body to LSU & a basic necropsy starts at $100. Then you need to narrow down the list of toxins (there are about 100 or so samples to compare against) & each comparison test can cost $25. That's just way too much money. So that's why my boss (head vet & clinic owner) & I will be doing the necropsy. We will be doing the necropsy at 7:30 tonight. I'm not sure if I will be emotionally capable of helping, but I will at least be there.

I will keep y'all updated

Sorry for yall's loss again. That would wreck me. Please make sure you get this situation put on paper with the sheriff's dept. If for no other reason then to build a pattern if anything else where to happen.

I'm back guys. It's been a long night. I won't be here much b/c I'm just too tired. But I would like to thank all of y'all for the supportive comments. It really does help. Cowboy did not die a death due to natural causes nor due to congenital defects such as a heart abnormailty or whatnot. What we did find just further reinforces our belief that he was poisoned.

I don't know what we're going to do. It's hard on me & all the rest of the clinic staff b/c Cowboy lived at our clinic for 2 months for he was legally property of the clinic. We all spent a lot of time making sure this dog not just survived, but lived. He was a part of each & every one of us & a is a reminder to not give up on the underdog..as the underdogs usually have more heart than those more priveleged.

Sonny is a nervous wreck as this was his first dog. He was just coming out of a very bad period in his life & this dog, in my eyes, saved him. He gave him a reason to go to work & come home every day. Sonny broke his hand in 3 places tonight after taking out some frustration on our brick wall & is still at the ER. So please everyone, I will be alright, but please pray for Sonny. He's taking this so very hard.

Nappy, i'm glad you mentioned stress, that's another reason for me to inflict more punishment on whoever did this!!! I really need to let out some inner anger, I a very calm person even under intense situations, so this person is going to feel the wrath of Bluepitt50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forget the year of courts and all the BS just for this person to get some fine, i'll be happy to save the harder working tax paying citizens of this country some money by making my own judgement, not some stupid fine for murdering a pup!!!!!
