HEart worm prevention

Whats the best medicine out there to help prevent heart worms, i jus took my dog Dozer to the vet, and he got his rabies vac, but the vet told me i should start looking in on some HEart worm stuff, he was selling some chewable tablets for like 38$ which last a month, i was kinda surprise cause its expensive, but does anyone know of any other meds which help prevent heart worms that may happen to be cheaper. Or is Heart worm stuff really expensive?

the best thing you can do for heart worms is go to your local feed store and look for some ivormectin. it is sold in 100 ml and runs anywhere from 35 to 40 dollars a bottle. it is for cattle and swine but can be given safely to dogs if dosed properly. if you know how to give a sub q injection, injection under the skin, thats the best way to go or it can be given orally. the correct way to dose is .1 cc per 10 lbs of body weight. and it should be given once a month. ivormectin is the same active ingredient in all the heart worm pills vets sale like heart gaurd etc. and if using a 3 cc syringe .1 cc is each line mark. for a 50 lb dog you would give .5 cc if you are only treating one dog a bottle of this will last you a long time, over a year, and it is the most cost effictive way to go to treat heart worms. hope this helps you out and good luck with the dog.

Ivoemec..orally once a month .10cc per 10lbs... 20lb dog gets .20cc, 30lb .30cc, 40lb .40cc and on and on and on....

Just to make sure everyone understands...it's 1/10th CC - hence the .1 - just don't want anyone thinking it's supposed to be 1 cc....a 50lb dog would get 1/2cc...again, just want to make sure...overdosing can be lethal

thanks, man this is way better than buying those tablets, cause theyr only a months supply and are expensive. Does TSC carry Invormectin?

when given orally, do you jus squirt the liquid in thier mouth with a dropper or
syringe(without the needle) or is it best to put it in meat or some sort of chewable treat? And how old is old enough for ivormectin?

I get Interceptor from the vet for my 50 lb dog and it only costs about 4 or 5 bucks per pill. The pills are given once a month.

Usually when I compare an expensive brand to a much cheaper store brand I just look on the back for the ingredients and amount contained. I've actually found that alot of cheap brand medicines contain the exact same ingredients and strength as the name brands, i've even found some cheap ones containing more of the ingredients!!!

Yes. The exact same thing, just with the “generic”, your not paying and being charged for all the fancy advertisements and such.

If you only have one or two dogs, you won’t use a fraction of the “Ivomec”, before it should be thrown out and generally more of a hassle, than it's worth.

i agree tex....i had my ivomec for awhile...wasnt sure how long it last so i let a freind do his yard with it and he paid for half of it..but istill would rather use ivomec...

where do you all get heartguard (or generic) online? petsupplies.net was the best deal i found a while back - it had free shipping for purchases over $60 but it takes a long time.

its called Heartguard Generic, heh jus like that, i found it on the internet on some petmeds site forgot which one but thats what its called Heartguard Generic.

I wouldnt recomend ivomec to somone who isnt expirenced with the drug...Plus like tex said you dont need to use ivomec if you only have 1 or 2 dogs..it would expire before you ever used it all. Get a prescription from your vet and order off 1800petmeds and they will deliver to your door. I like interceptor and sentinel. Both are like an all in one..worms + heartworms..and I believe sentinel does fleas and ticks too.

Actually most vets are cheaper than 1-800-PetMeds. I know that they can be as much as $5-6 more expensive than your vets office.

For the most vet hospitals it would cost you like $70 dollars for a year supply of HeartGuard Plus for a dog 51-100 lbs. I actually like using Revolution, but I think that I might have to switch to Heartguard and Frontline Plus because I moved to a heavy tick area.

Thanks for the kudos, Badger. I’d just use the one your veterinary recommended and/or you are comfortable giving too your dog.
If someone has only a couple of dogs, they should buy a heartworm preventative. If they have a yard of dogs, most tend to use plain Ivomec. In my opinion Ivomec is useless for treating worm in dogs, so I only use it for a heartworm preventative. Like most seem to, just I don’t vastly overdose my dogs with it, like most seem too(1cc per 110lbs)! The dog’s only need 3-6 mcg of Ivomec (1mL of Ivomec = 10 mg), for a heartworm preventative.
