A freind of mine called me and told me this girl that she knew gave her 1 year old dog 4 cc's of IVOMEC..OMG needless to say the dog died that night. The breeder, if you want to call the moron that, told the girl when you get the dog home give it a full syringe of ivomec just to make sure there isnt any worms!!! She goes and buys a thing of Ivomec from the feedstore..It clearly states in the bottle "for use in cattle 1cc per 110lbs, swine 1cc per 75lbs" She dosed that poor dog the dosage for a COW...Then the part that gets me when she took the dog to the vet(after it was sesiureing(sp), vomiting blood and bloody stools)the vet told her the dog had PARVO!!!!! The whole point in posting this thread is for people who are not familar with the seriousness of dosing ivomec, Ivomec is a drug that must be measured correctley and NOT overdosed. The correct dosage for ivomec is 1/2cc per 50lbs....1/4cc per 25lbs..I just dont want anyone who doesnt know anything about ivomec read some of the posts about ivomec to go out and buy it and not know the dosage and end up killing their dog..

Poor dog!! The whole point to this is, if you do not know how to properly dose your dog- CALL YOUR VET!! They can tell you everything that you need to know. But the proper dosage is 1/10 cc per 10 lbs. of body weight. It is easiest to give it orally. But, please do not give any medications to your dog without consulting your vet first. If you would not give yourself dangerous meds without consulting a doctor first, why would you do it to your pet?? Think first!!

Damn that is messed up even if she would have told the vet he probably wouldn't know what he or she was talking about any way. That is sad I bet that poor dog suffered before it died. Very informative post TabDogs

Many people think that by giving a dog a stronger dosage that it will make sure the job gets done. What they fail to realize is that the dosage is there for a reason and exceeding it can damage many things inside your dogs. Take worming for example, you don't give a dog 1 big dosage to make sure you kill all the worms. The most effective way is to give it the proper dosage and then repeat such for a total of 2-3 treatments with 2-4 weeks inbetween each time given. This safely ensures that all worms are killed, assuming that it is already known that your dog has worm and that you know what species they are. I use Drontal Plus and it works wonderfully, pill or liquid, most vets use it. It kills Roundworms, Tapeworms, Hookworms, and Whipworms, most of the species your dog will come across even as an adult.
Another problem is that many people use medicines that are made for larger animals. If you know what your doing then great, but no beginner should give a dog anything from these concentrations unless they know all about it. Many people don't believe that 1 cc can be strong just because of how small it looks, that's when they feel comfortable with adding a couple more ccs, meanwhile that first cc was already too much!!!

Great thread Tab! We try to warn people that "more" is not always "better" & is in fact "worse".
even if she would have told the vet he probably wouldn't know what he or she was talking about any way Just out of curiosity, why is that?

Just out of curiosity, why is that?
I know you didn't ask me, but I would guess because the dumba$$ vet told her the pup had parvo when she took it in.
I unfortunately overdosed all my dogs on ivermec the first time I administered it. I was fortunate that none of them died. It was simply because someone else told me the incorrect dosage. I have obviously learned my lesson from that experience. Hopefully someone will read this and a possibly fatal accident will be avoided. Great post Tab!

I quit using Ivomec. I would rather spend my $ on HeartguardPLUS. I havent had good sucess with Ivomec. Maybe its my dosing... maybe its me? I had one test positive using Ivomec, using 1/10cc per 10lbs... Thankgod, looks like Heartguard has fix him. Vet says: "might have been the shelf life of the Medicine." Whatcha think Mia, Tab? Besides, Im jus not keen on giving my dog Rx that says: "this my kill ur dog right on the bttl..?
Heartguard leaves no room for comments like:
"I unfortunately overdosed all my dogs on ivermec the first time I administered it. "
