I'd like to hear your opinions voiced on this subject!
What I do is pull the dog off the chain, get you some dish soap with alot of suds like some Ajax and wash the hell out of them and dry them off, once your finished use some Gard Star 40%, 3cc's down the neck to the ass end for dogs upto 50 lbs.
This should keep you clean for about a month. The next time you have to use the gard star you don't have to give the bath, I recommend you doing this just for the first time. ;)
could u share more info on gaurd star? and were to get it. i have been using advantix and it only seems to work for about a week and a half then the flees are back. and then it starts to look like they are getting mange but it is just the flees. been trying everything and even took them to the vet and no solutions are really helping.
thanks for your contrabution

To kill the flea larvae...put down SALT in the chain spaces...the kind you buy at the feed store in 50lb bags...its best done early spring...but do it now and it will help.

I've always used salt and it does a good job. Also what I do from what I learned from a friend thats been in the dogs for ages is every few days I wipe my dogs down with apple cider vinegar mixed with a lil water. Its worked for me and it saves money if your on a budget! ;)

I`ll try the salt idea and see what happens thanks for the suggestion. Now don't expect a miracle with the salt, as its best when put down in early spring before the larvae are hatching off...if you put it down now, I'd put it down again in say 3-4mos maybe?? A 50lb bag should be enough to do at least 2 chain spaces coated pretty heavily.

You can also was you dogs with Dawn dishwashing liquid and a capful of Orignal Pine Sol. I haven't had fleas in years and this along with the salt is all I've used. The salt also helps keep worms in the ground down to a minimum.

If you have a dog that had a bad case of worms. when he shits worms and their larvea stay in the ground for X amount of time. The salt sterilizes the ground and kills most of the worms and their larvea. Vet told me this few years back and I really haven't had a problem after I get one cleaned out/

Salt 50lbs bag from the feed store.
lots of good info in this thread. flees are the only thing i have ever had a problem with. and have been through the tractor supply flee meds (sprays, flee dips, etc), been to the vet and got advantix. everything just seemed to be a temporary fix and after a few days to a week they were all over the place in the house, all over the yard on my dogs. hell one of my females i recently learn has an allergic reation to the flees and i have been treating her with mange medicine as it apeared to be mange. i will pick up a bottle of that stuff next week when i go to tractor supply to get feed. how much does a bottle of that cost and how big is it..

I gave my dog garlic/brewers yeast tablets and had no problem with fleas.I guess everyone has there own solution just stick with what works best for you
Just shows how many different, yet affordable routes to go with the "battle of the fleas"!
We have used the table salt (we get ours at Food Lion) for a while with great results in combination with other preventatives. I agree BigTex..keeping up with the yard is a big plus. One of the things we maintain on a daily basis. Once you get in the habit of doing it daily the work load is minimum. We do use the apple vinegar for pups but not really so much with the older dogs. Our favorite thing is the Sevin dust (feed store about 7$ a bag). This stuff is AWESOME! It's gentle enough for growing fruits, kittens etc but strong enough to kill a ant mound in a matter of minutes. We rub it onto the dogs and put it in and around the dog house. Every couple of months we clean out the dog houses, spray bleach water on runs and put down lyme.
Honestly, being in the woods...our biggest problem is mosquitoes!!!

I have always had horses so I use a lot of different types of things for pesticides and such.I have not had fleas around my animals in years and all I do is use agricultural lyme.It costs me $5 a 50 pound bag and it's a fine white powder.I use a seed spreader and go over the whole premise with it.I originally used it in my stalls to kill the ammonia and bacteria from the urine and feces of the horses. It works great for me.The only thing is you have to put it down at least a day or so before it rains so it has a chance to mix in the ground.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, 18-1 Hemp Peppermint, works good but won't keep fleas away.
All the info on fleas is great but what bout mosquitos? Never had much of a problem that Adams spray never handled, but after 4 Hurricanes hit Fla. and left buckets of water everywhere the mosquito pop. boomed. The only thing I found to work was Deep Woods Off sprayed everyday. Any thoughts?

Before you take them outside into the woods where ticks are really heavy etc... mix 1/4 cup garlic powder, 1/2 lemon juice, and 1/3 cup water and put it in a spray bottle. Also about 1 a week mix 2 cups garlic oil & 1 cup water.

Sevens dust is highly toxic, as is pine sol. The best thing I have ever found for fleas is frontline plus. You can get it online at a reasonable price, much cheaper than what the vets charge. It kills all cycles of the flea life cycle. It absorbs into the skin and hair follicle, kills the fleas on them, then when they scratch or shed the fleas in the environment are killed. It also kills the flea larvae when they feed on the dead skin cells. It also has a growth inhibitor hormone that prevents any newly laid eggs from hatching. It kills fleas for 30 days, and the growth hormone lasts about 3 months. We had a major flea infestation in the house and yard when we first moved in, started using the frontline, and they haven't been an issue yet. I don't even have to treat all the animals now, just the ones that seem to have allergies to the fleas.
Sevens dust is a highly toxic insecticide and absorbs into the bloodstream of the animal and the levels of the poison build up throughout the dogs lifetime. Also, if you have children, it absorbs into the ground the child plays on, and they are exposed to it. The levels of toxins also build up in their bodies.

I agree, I've used a bleach/water mixture for the doghouse and surrounding ground, and then used lyme. I haven't seen a bug in a year. I also agree that lyme is best used on wet ground to soak in.

If you have a limited number of dogs, Revolution and Ivermectin work wonders on fleas, ticks, mites, and worms (not all).
As in Japan, we have alot of spiders...BIG ones too. If you have spiders in your yard, KEEP THEM. No, I'm not joking. Out here, the spiders take care of all the mesquitos, flying insects, fleas, bugs....everything. Buddy of mine, dogman for 40 years, tried ridding his yard of the spiders once, only to insite a huge insect problem. He let the spiders stay - no more fleas, ticks, flys, mesquitos, etc. Not for everyone...just an idea.
Apple Cider Vinegar is awesom at insect repelling and general skin conidtioning. It helps with small rashes and irritations. If you have a puppy with a belly-rash, a spray bottle with a mix of ACV and water will cure it by the next sun up.
During the summer (most of the year, here) I give modified versions of "satin balls" as treats. They have alot of fresh minced garlic and ACV, solely for the purposes of pest control. I guess the buggers figure, "this dog friggin STANKS!" and stay away :)
I use Cydectin cattle wormer...it kills internal and external parasites. i give about 5 cc to a 35 pounder I have given more and doesnt hurt them. I give it to my goats, sheep and chickens. I have used it for 3yrs now without any bad reactions...RGF

Frontline works for about 4 days around here. Which is not good condidering it is tick city out here. :p Fleas aren't as bad as in the city for some reason, but the ticks are rampant. Contantly checking the dogs for them. Found one on me from being outside for only a couple hours. For the fleas we use this natural flea remedy, it goes on the ground kinda like sevin dust, but it completly non-harmful for the dogs. Got it as wal-mart. It even has instuctions to use on animals or in the house, and dosages for mixing in the animals food. I can't remeber the name of it though. When I get home I'll check and post it.

here's the retarded part, i sprayed him with a skin softener

i sprayed him with it, the fleas fell off of him dead. never

Sevens dust is a highly toxic insecticide and absorbs into the bloodstream of the animal and the levels of the poison build up throughout the dogs lifetime. Also, if you have children, it absorbs into the ground the child plays on, and they are exposed to it. The levels of toxins also build up in their bodies.
maybe so but they have had sucess in local spca and pound with it also did you read all the stuff on frontline carefully thats not bottled water either it kills tons of insects other than fleas .. and in some states only licensed officials can handle the stuff.. natural ways are good but im still looking for the best answer to all.. my friends swear by orange oil soap but i havent tried it im still looking for the best answer to this flea dilema ....

Hi all, I'm new to this board.
I've got a small Pit Bull kennel in Southern Michigan. Its been a bad year for fleas according to everyone I’ve talked to. Not sure if your dogs got fleas but I thought I'd let you in on something I'm using.
Here is the link to what I buy:
http://www.epestsupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=BAYERPREMISE
It is $69 for a 240 ml bottle. Since you use only 1 ml per dog the cost per treatment is 29 cents!
This is the EXACT chemical (Imidicloprid) in the dog flea treatment Advantage and is made by the same company Bayer. Just take a syringe (without needle) and apply 1 ml between the shoulder blades. I haven't seen 1 flea on my dogs since I started using this over a year and a half ago.

I have tried Frontline/Fipronil.
It didn't work as well as Advantage/Imidicloprid.
Just my experience.

I had to keep fleas and flys away. I use Permithrin in the yard, along with sulfur pellets. And on the dogs I was using a mix of 1/3 water, 1/3 pinesol/ 1/3 vinegar, and it worked well. But not so much for the flies. So the feed store had flys off liquid and i put it on. Man it worked great. The permithrin works for the flys as well. The guy that runs the feed store researched it and they actually use the natural version of it, because it comes from a plant.... in water sources in africa to kill off all the nasty stuff in the water. So you can also dip your dogs in it as well. I also spray malathion every once in a while to switch it up. But you have to spray every two weeks for like 2 months due to the cycle of the eggs. They lay them and then leave, so you have to break the cycle. Tractor supplies and feed stores have been my bestfriend in taking care of my pups.

This is the first year in a long time I have had the amount of fleas I have in my yard. In the past I started out the season with Frontline plus & follwed up with garlic everday. While waiting for my shipment of Frontline I rememberd I had some Diatomaceous Earth. Safe, 100% natural way to kill fleas on dogs & in yards. It is not a chemical & not harmful to anything but bugs. Kills flies, ticks, ants Can also be fed for parasite control. Takes about 24-72 hours for fleas to completely die but is starts to work immediatly, I just put some on my dogs & I watched the fleas fall off of them and start to die. It is safe for human contact & the dogs can lick their fur with no worries. Like I said it can also be used in their food to control worms. AND it is cheap!! I ordered mine from this company but there are other places to buy it. Just make sure it is FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous Earth, not the kind made for swimming pools!!

This is the first time I've ever had a problem with fleas here and they are getting pretty bad. But I'm also having a huge problem with FLIES and spiders every where. I'm gonna try some of the things mentioned but for now I've been spraying EVERYTHING down with bleach, flea shampoo, and a little water. I added the flea shampoo in there just because it was sitting there when I filled the sprayer but it seems like it did alot of good. Boudreaux was just full of fleas so I had to give him a good soaking with flea shampoo and he wasnt too happy about it...
But I'm definately gonna use some of the advice on here and hope to get rid of the bastards...

The use of Permethrin 10% is a potent and effective way of ridding the yard and dogs of flea's. This can be purchased at local feed stores and online for local use in and around the house. Permethrin is highly poisonous so mixing exactly the way the directions tell you is very important. You can mix with water or baby oil. Baby oil is more effective on the dogs because it allow's the Permethrin to adhere to applied area and the rain can't just wash it off after you spray 15 dogs. By the way, this will save you some money and does the job you set out to do.
Use as a dip or spray by mixing 99 parts water or baby oil to 1 parts Permethrin. I use 20 ounce (591)ml baby oil so about 5 1/2 ml of permethrin will be the mixture for you. Just use simple numbers to round it off to and you will kick some flea ass around your house. Once your done with the dip or spray don't discard! Go ahead and spray around the house for other bugs. This mixture is great for killing fire ants like it's cool and if you live in the south like me and a few others on this site, killing them bastards is a blessing. Hope this helps, Slick

BTW, the termidor and frontline difference is that the frontline also has a ....egr(sp?) Its the stuff that breaks the life cycle of the flea. But if you buy some of that stuff, and mix it with termidor, use it very sparingly, as it will remove hair from your dogs and you'll think they are having hot spots. Best thing for the yard is peremetheroid. You cannot get it without a liscense, but if you have a buddy who sprays crops of something, about 75 buck will last you a lifetime. But when you spray the houses and yard, you'll have to have the dogs moved for about 3 days, or it'll be nothing nice. I have a barrel with a lid mixed up with some stuff that'll kill anything but the dog in 60 seconds, then I chain them on the other side of the property, then I gear up (cause you dont want this chemical on you) and spray the area. You dont even have to soak the area, just wet it a little, and it'll kill them nasty things.
About the spiders. Let them stay. If you are having spiders, it is cause they are feeding on allot of flying mosquitos and flies. BTW, if you are having bad flies, you need to keep the yard cleaner. I have a friend down the road who has an infestation with flies, I have none. Guess what the difference is. That's right. My yard is clean, his is not.

I worked as an exterminator. If you want to get the fleas, ants, spiders, ticks, roaches and anything else with 6 or more legs out of your yard call your local pest control and ask how much it would be to get a yard spray done. They will probly give you a package deal for inside the house and outdoor yard spray for $50.00 every three months or so. Maybe a little more for the first visit. Get them to throw in a free termite inspection of the house. The products they use are perfectly safe to use on dog houses, runs, kennels and bedding areas. Make sure they use a knock down mixed with a growth inhibitor. If you can get them to spray Termidor outside you won't have bugs in the yard for years. Check into it. It's not as expensive as you think and you can keep your grass.

How heavy would a man need to mix the termidor, and would the yard need to be soaked to the bone, or just misted?

It would depend on what you got ahold of. Termidor comes in a variety of forms and strenths. Best I can tell you is rule #1, follow the label instructions. You don't need to soak down with it, just a good mist. If you mow the grass first you will have a better chance of killing hatching fleas. Vibration make the eggs hatch. If you spray in the house(which I wouldn't advise with Termador) make sure to stomp your feet. It encourages flea eggs to hatch.
