Your Worst Nightmare
05-07-2004, 11:54 AM
I know alot of people have problems once in a while keeping weight on pups (big litters).
What have you guys used to keep them pups nice phat and healthy?
Of course you should always remember to have them wormed out and free of coccsida :)
I use this product called POUNDS PLUS, sometimes I use oatmeal + buttermilk.

i have always used evaporated goats milk make into almost milk shake thickness and dumped all over their food. as the dogs are completely taken away from their mom i just shake dry evap goat milk on their food. really works wonders and a bag 25 lbs will last a good 4-5 litters. works as good as cottage cheese but alot cheaper.

I use a product called calf manna and its basically like goats milk. Comes in powder form and I mix it with puppies food. Ialso at feeding time make sure that there isnt a couple of bullies getting the bulk of the food also.i have always used evaporated goats milk make into almost milk shake thickness and dumped all over their food. as the dogs are completely taken away from their mom i just shake dry evap goat milk on their food. really works wonders and a bag 25 lbs will last a good 4-5 litters. works as good as cottage cheese but alot cheaper.

I have always free fed and mine always look good
We have used the Goat's milk and we have tried cottage cheese in conjunction with puppy kibble. But, the best results we have seen is Peak Grow with Chicken Soup for Soul (puppy kibble). Have never free fed and the pups were very healthy and active. :)

I give ESiblac powder tomother over her food prior to birth of pups. Once pups arrive, to give mom a nursing break i hand feed at about 2 weeks olds using goats milk or ESiblac powder. At 3 weeks I start them on blended puppy kibble with a can of moist food. Pups maintain weight with minimal stress on mother. at 5 weeks I mix the can with the dry kibble. Once a month I give them a can of tuna, salmon or mackeral over the dry kibble after 6 weeks. after 6 weeks i only use dry kibble. i seperate each pup to ensure no bullies dominate the food bowls.

human infant milk, can be good, you can also use a combination of yolks of eggs, moist dogfood mixed in with the dry dogfood.

you can also use some high fat like non-dairy creamer, it will put the weight on anything and it is harmless to them, actually they like it alot. Keeping flees off your pups is a big thing as intestinal parasites are caused by those little guys, I often spread diazinon over the puppy grassy area of the puppy pen, then lightly water it several days before putting puppies in the pen, by then the diazinon has disipated, and the fleas and ticks are either dead or have left the area.

I myself feed CNI's Nurture to the pups and mother as well! If the pups are still feeding off the mother I separate the litter in half to feed.....separate the mother from the pups to give her a chance to recover and produce more milk. I will also feed the pups individually sometimes to make sure each pup get there fill. Remember to worm them out weekly.
I don't see the need to free feed also as they just end up shitting most of it or knocking the kibble all over! I feed pups twice a day and they have done fine!

does too much weight on pups ruins its pastern?
We also put goats milk on their food, and worm weekly with Nemex starting at 10 days old, along with worming the mom then and bi weekly.....also, prior to breeding.....as far as breaking down the pasterns, anythings possible, however we have never really noticed by having chunky pups a problem....generally, they are either good and up on their pasterns or their not...

I just blend the puppy food into sort of a milk shake and let them go to town...LOL..Once they start crunching the kibble i leave a large bowl full and let them eat as they please. Keep wormings and shots on schedule and pups should do good. I worm with pyran, and keep the puppy area clean and free of waste ...with good care pups should thrive..

I use evaporated goats milk with some whole fat yogurt( good bacteria gets introduced to the intestines, very good for the pups) and egg yolks, never egg whites Ive heard it can cataracts in pups.Pour over pups food, and theyll love it.I also used this to supplement, hand raise some pups a mother refused to feed and it worked very well, no diarrhea, and pups were huge.:)
I recently used CNI Nurture on a litter of 12 that was real hard for momma to keep fed. They did VERY well off of it and gained weight a lot faster being supplemented with puppy gruel. I'll be using it from now on with any litter. I mixed it with natural yogurt (no preservatives, sugar, etc etc) and some high quality feed and the pups did VERY well off of it. www.getcni.com (http://www.getcni.com) sells the products...

stop feeding weight gainers when the dog is at the correct weight. You should not be able to see the spine and vaguely see rib cage. I usually fatten mine up more in the winter where I cannot see the ribs at all and they have a little belly on them.

Ok when i breed my Chows we keep weight on the puppies by wet dog food store bought puppy milk geen (peas ect) and oatmeal. Now i knoe pit bulls are different my females pit lost weight and we have tried most the things people have said and she barely inching back on weight. The Vet has cleared her of any health problems which is a must the vet and i have come up with believe it or not homecooking meals for her. As for free feeding i will say with chow chow you can not do that they will eat theirself in to being overwieght.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v438/EllsinoreOutlaw/Dudley/Im001998.jpgfor a pup that is picky do go ahead and make its food.. i left a really good recipe for that .. basically chicken livers , a wee bit of garlic , olive oil egg yolks and some fiber from organic brown rice , ground corn or even the pasta tht is with fiber , or sweet potatoes ..you might add some green beans to that, and organic yogurt.. it will be very rewarding when your baby is all healthy,, a favorite is salmon and sweet potatoe.. lol ,, need to write doggie food cook book.. start there and work your way to to a balanced dog food for your pet once pet is feeding readily sneak in a few nicely wet and soft dog kibble ,, a lil more every third day.. till puppy accepts kibble a little wet due to little teeth you know.. then dry it up as time goes by..dont anyone go crazy on the veggies some are full of sugar and dogs dont need sugar like peas and carrots , i do feed it but not alot..

I am pasting a copy of a "pm" Hoyden send me for Spirit to gain weight after he got sick... he lost some weight... I am sure and hope that she won't mind, it is very good info...

I worked with a vet for several years and later fostered dogs, so I know how to put weight back on them.
If his stools are soft still, you can add a bit of pumpkin to his food, about two LARGE tablespoons worth. Not the pie filler pumpkin, the other kind in a can.
If his stomache can handle it, I'd put two to three large tablespoons of organic plain yogurt, the kind with active yogurt cultures, into his food. This will help restore the good bacteria to his gut. Start with one tablespoon to see if he can take it though. I'd just feed it to him off the spoon for the first few days, like a treat. Don't get the low fat or no fat kind because he needs the fat right now.
I've enclosed the recipe for satin balls below. These put weight on quite well, but you may be limited by your ability to store them or the ingredients while you are traveling. If you can make small batches, that would work out well.
The other thing is to consider is that the recalls on pet food right now are pretty scary. Anything with wheat, corn or rice should be avoided. Check his treats, dog food and anything else you feed him that is not made by you.
The best dog food around is called Timberwolf Organics. http://timberwolforganics.com/ You can locate a store near where you are or you are going to be. This is probably a good way to bring along food that will keep his weight up and keep him healthy.
It has several formulas, the best for Spirit right now would be the Lamb, Apple and Barley (28% Protein/ 18% Fat) or better yet, with your activity level, you should probably feed him the Wild & Natural Dry (36% Protein/18% Fat) which has NO grains at all in it.
It is on the expensive side, in CT, I pay $55.00 for a 33 lb. bag which lasts my two dogs 4 - 6 weeks depending on time of year and how much other stuff we feed them. You feed LESS kibble with Timberwolf because there are less fillers and junk in the food, so he won't get as much food as, say Iams, Eukanuba, Pedigree etc. I used to feed 4 to 6 cups to each dog with the other dog foods, with Timberwolf, they get 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 cups daily.
I can not say enough good things about Timberwolf. Birdie had horrible allergies, especially to corn, they are gone now and she looks like a show dog with her beautiful fur. Petey had several fatty tumors bigger than quarters on his legs that the vet was going to remove, they disappeared after 6 months on Timberwolf, never to return. All the "bully bumps" or dog pimple rashes that he has ALWAYS had his entire life also disappeared and have not come back. Petey is 9 years old now and he is very very healthy. He's been on TW for the past two years. Our new vet wouldn't have believed he was nine unless she saw his records with his date of birth, she thought he was 4 or 5 years old.
If Timberwolf is hard to find, the next best kibble is Merrick http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/. (http://www.merrickpetcare.com/store/)
I would only feed him the Wildness Blend Dry food though, the others don't have enough protein & fat for him. The canned food is good too for supplementing him to put on weight or to just mix in. My dogs love it, it's like dog crack to them.
Here's the recipe for Satin Balls. There are others, but this one has been the best for pit bulls that I've fostered that needed to put on weight. It can be found on the Holistic Dog site, lots of good info there, so bookmark it for future reference. http://www.holisticdog.org/Nutritio...satinballs.html (http://www.holisticdog.org/Nutrition/Satinballs/satinballs.html)
SATIN BALLS
5 pounds ground meat
5 cups Total whole grain cereal
5 cups oats (slow cooking type)
2½ cups raw wheat germ
¾ cup oil
¾ cup molasses
6 egg yolks
5 packets gelatin
2 ½ tablespoons Solid Gold Seameal supplement
Mix all ingredients together thoroughly like you would a meatloaf.
Roll into balls no larger than 1 inch diameter.
Divide into at least 6 separate containers or bags. Freeze. Thaw as needed for feeding.
Their directions say to feed 1 pack per day, half in the AM & half in the PM as a meal. But to put on weight, I would feed the normal amount of kibble to the dog (TW 2 cups) PLUS two satin balls. Putting the weight back on too fast is not good. Gradually adding it is healthier.
Okay - I hope that helps you. Give Spirit some extra loves for us, we'll keep him in our thoughts and prayers. [quote]
