First off, I say hitting is a no-no. That's not to say I've never popped my dogs in the butt or anything, but hitting in the face can lead to defensive measures from the dog such as fear-biting. A fear-biter dog is worse than an aggressive dog since it feels it's biting to defend it's life. If your dog has his head in the trash, a lil pop on the ass to get his attention & turn him away is not harmful. But NEVER take out anger on your dog! As for personality differences b/n the sexes, it's actually up to the individual dogs. Some say males are more laid back w/the females being dominant & some say it's vice versa, but I think it all depends on the individual dog. Personality differences in dogs can be seen as early as 5 or 6 weeks as the puppies in the litter start developing a social status order. Their personalities grow as the dog grows physically. That's part of the fun of owning these breeds. Most are clowns. Back to disciplining, begin establishing "dominance" over your dog as soon as you get him. Now this is not a negative thing & is not done by screaming & hitting (not implying that anyone does this), but rather through obedience. Teach sit, down, stay, off (the furniture or whatever), wait (till you say it's ok for him to eat or take a treat from you), give or release, take, etc. Through this type of obedience your dog learns to take commands from you thereby establishing rank over him. Although stubborn, APBTs are very eager to please their owner so give them a chance.

yep ..I would say the same Hitting can lead to a dog being hand shy or worse ..and nothing is fun about a dog who cringes everytime he /she sees your hand coming to pet it

With dominate pups I like the work for food method

One other point Miakoda brings up .. say you dont want your dogs on the bed, couch, etc. Then dont let them as pups. Anything you dont want adult dogs to do, dont let pups do and anything you want your dog to do , start training as a pup

These dogs dont respond well to negative reinforcement. They generally do better with positive reinforcement
