Charlotte, NC -- A Charlotte man whose pit bull dogs mauled his 8-year-old son in April pleaded guilty Monday to drug and weapons charges stemming from a search of his house after the brutal attack.

Roddie Dumas, 29, pleaded guilty in federal court to possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon. Dumas entered his plea just after U.S. District Judge William Osteen rejected a defense motion that the search of Dumas' home was illegal and the prosecution's key evidence -- guns and drugs found inside the residence -- should be thrown out.

A trial on charges of using and carrying a firearm during a drug trafficking crime and intimidating and interfering with a U.S. letter carrier followed the plea. Jurors began deliberating the charges late Monday. At 11 a.m. Tuesday there was still no verdict.

Two of the charges are punishable by up to life in prison. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.

Dumas also is charged in state court with involuntary manslaughter in connection with his son's killing. No trial date has been set.

Roddie Dumas Jr. died when four pit bulls attacked him in the back yard of his father's home in west Charlotte.

Michael Redice, the letter carrier Dumas is accused of intimidating, broke down Monday on the witness stand as he recalled trying to save Roddie from the attacking dogs.

"I saw four dogs mauling the child to death," Redice, wiping his eyes and hanging his head, told jurors. "I've never seen anything like that before in my life."

"They were biting him on his legs and neck," Redice said. "He was screaming for help. I got me a stick and jumped over the fence. I got the dogs off him."
Dumas and his girlfriend were at home at the time of the dog attack, but didn't come out until Roddie had already been fatally injured, police and witnesses have said.

Redice told jurors that when he saw Dumas, he questioned the father about why he had not heard his son's pleas for help.

"You got to be blind, dumb or stupid," the letter carrier recalled telling Dumas.

Redice said Dumas pointed his finger at him as if holding a gun and threatened to kill him.

Under cross examination by the defense, Redice acknowledged that he was not at the residence delivering mail but rather was trying to save the child.

Dumas did not testify during his trial, and his lawyer presented no evidence at the end of the government's case.

During closing arguments Monday, defense attorney Scott Gsell told jurors that the prosecution hadn't proven that Dumas intimidated the letter carrier or used the weapons in drug dealing.

Gsell argued that guns being found near drugs is not sufficient evidence to convict his client.

"We have the firearms. We have the drugs," the defense lawyer said. "But we don't have that key evidence that links the two."

WTF was that idiot doing that he didn't hear something like that going on in his yard. That child had to have been screaming bloody murder. He needs to have someone check his head, because IMO it's gotta be open for rent. I agree with the mail man, the father would have to be blind, dumb, or just not give a fuck to have let this happen.

let me ask you honestly. Did his picture have to be shown??? To me it seems as though its pointing out one type of person. And they had to put the roughest picture of the guy up.

no problem. not saying that you did it on purpose, I just feel that if you leave a pic up there, people will get the impression that this is the only type of person that is causing harm to our breed. Nice post though.

A agree 100% I see this alot of this with all types of people esp. celebrities. Im sorry to think that the media has to put the worst images of people attached to there stories so the public can render them guilty.."that guy looks like he would do that" see and hear it all the time. This doesent apply so much to this story (because i can't see how this guy could let this happen) but to the media in general.let me ask you honestly. Did his picture have to be shown??? To me it seems as though its pointing out one type of person. And they had to put the roughest picture of the guy up.

You knowI personally know the father and he really is a good guy! Yes, although he was part of the "thug" scene, he has a great heart and LOVED Roddie Jr dearly! I know this for a fact! Had he known what waas really going on he would have let himself be killed before his son! And yes, the A/C was on, the TV was and he was in the very back of the house, so NO folks, he is NOT stupid, nor blind, he was asleep! You know one day believe it or not, we will be in a aituation where others "can't believe" we didn't do this or hear that or see this.....remeber, Let only God Judge! I see now that the mother is actually making MONEY off of her dead son! A foundation indeed, for what? anhd where is the $70.00 a plate money going? Ever think that if he was as bad a they say WHY she left her son with him? Food for thought!!!
