Origin: Originally bred in 19th-century England to fight other dogs in pits.
Breeding: Created by crossing a bulldog with a terrier.
Names: Have been known as bull-terriers, half-halfs, old family dogs and bull terriers.
Characteristics: Stocky, muscular, strong and endowed with an unusually large jaw.
Description: 45 to 55 centimetres tall and weigh up to 36 kilograms. Mostly black or brown.
How some Canadian communities deal with pit bulls:
- Ontario became first province in Canada to seek a provincewide ban on pit bulls and similar breeds this summer.
- New Brunswick began public hearings in November on possible law to restrict pit bulls and Rottweilers.
- Winnipeg: banned pit bulls in 1991, dropping average number of attacks to one or two per year from an average of 25.
- Vancouver: Pit bulls and some terrier breeds automatically considered vicious, must be muzzled in public and fenced in at home.
- Edmonton: Licence fees and fines for owners of pit bulls higher; owners must take out liability insurance.
- Macdonald, Man.: Pit bulls banned.
- Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont.: Pit bulls and some terrier breeds prohibited within city limits.
- Sherbrooke, Que.: Pit bulls banned and controls are required on rottweilers and mastiffs.
