Texarkana, TX -- The Bowie County Sheriff's Department is looking for anyone who has information on a male pit bull dog that was found on the side of Interstate 30.
Deputies on patrol Tuesday night found the dog chained to a fence at I-30 and state Highway 98 near New Boston, said Capt. Sherrie Pappas. The dog was standing in a puddle of water.
"They were going to leave it until first shift because there are more resources during the day, but then (Deputy) George Huggins Jr. started thinking about ... how cold it was going to be that night. He went and got the dog," Pappas said. "He didn't want to leave it out in the cold."
Bowie County does not have an animal control officer.
Witnesses told Huggins they had seen the dog in the area earlier in the day and that it had the chain on.
Therefore, investigators are not certain if someone chained the dog to the fence or the chain became wrapped around the fence.
Either way, members of the sheriff's department would like to find the dog's owner or help it find a new home.
"It could have been stolen and the owner would like to have him back," Pappas said. "But if we can't find the owner, the dog will have to be placed with another home."
Pappas said the full-grown dog is black and white and appears very healthy and friendly.
Anyone with information about the pit bull is asked to call 903-798-3149.
