Austin, TX -- Man's best friend is back home thanks to a little computer chip.

A female pitbull had been missing for six months. On Tuesday a man walking his dogs near the Austin Zoo found her and called the Zoo Sanctuary to see if someone would pick her up.

They did, and this dog was more than happy to be rescued a second time.

"I got her from the Town Lake Animal Rescue and when I got her she had a chip in her neck. The people at the zoo had a scanner and they were able to scan her and the they called me this afternoon," owner Brad Ehlers said.

"On a whim, I decided to scan her and see if she had a microchip. Luckily, that owner followed through and got it registered," zoo Director Cindy Carroccio said.

It's believed the dog was likely dumped in the area because it's far from her owner's home. But she's healthy and in good shape.

It is illegal in the state of Texas to abandon or dump an animal

You can have it done by your vet.I know most around here charge about 45 dollars or so. CKC does it for dogs registered with them for like 30 bucks.

Mine too was $50. It will only work if the animal is scanned. If someone takes your dog(s) and never brings them to a vet or an animal shelter or a zoo(LOL) they will never be found. A female of mine has been gone for over a year now and she has one.

That sucks JennKBM but you're right, if the vet or shelter doesn't scan your dog then you're screwed. I debated whether or not I wanted to tattoo my dog with an ID or my name. Not sure if that would help out if he gets lost or stolen. There was an oil delivery guy in the mid 20s that was eyeing my dog for a good 10 minutes when I was walking him a while ago. It got me a bit nervous to the point where I'm wondering about a 2nd form of identification.

I've heard of the tattoo ID does the vet do that.
Some vets do. It's normally on the inside of a rear hind leg so in order to lose the tattoo ID, the dog needs to get a leg amputated.

Sad part about it is that nothing is fool proof. I guess you could maybe buy some high tech tracking device $$$ with GPS and the whole nine yards... Do we even have anything like that yet? I was really upset for a while but we kept high hopes up that someone would be calling saying they had found her. She was one of the best dogs I have ever had! Guess the best thing to do is make sure your dogs are really really secure. We went to look at some puppies one time and the guy had cameras on his property (each kennel) security lights and the whole nine yards. He only had a total of four dogs but they were VERY secure.

This was Dixie before she was stolen...

Thats a nice looking dog.I hope whoever stole your dog has an unfortinate accident.People that need to steal another ones dog have no place in society.I hope one day you get your dog back.It is a very nice looking dog.

Yes a few vets tattoo dogs .I have used this form of ID in the past.I have never used freeze branding on a dog although we did do our horses. It works well if you have a colored dog as on our horses the hair grew back white.
