View Full Version : Chained to doghouse, man protests tethering

On this day celebrating independence, 39-year-old Bryan Wilson will chain himself to a doghouse in a Sanford park and spend eight hours tethered in the hot sun.

It's part of a national "Chain Off" event that highlights something many Americans never question: keeping a dog on a chain.

Dogs are highly social animals, and experts say prolonged isolation on a chain is both cruel and dangerous. It can make a once-docile, happy creature turn aggressive, neurotic and viciously territorial.

Last month a 5-year-old Lake County boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital after being attacked by his grandmother's chained lab-chow mix -- even though the dog knew the boy.

"Something as innocuous as a child coming up to pet the dog can be seen as a threat," said Wilson of Winter Springs. He and his wife, Carla Wilson, have lobbied Seminole County to pass an anti-tethering law that limits or bans keeping dogs chained up.

They have considerable backing. The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared the continuous tethering of dogs "inhumane" back in 1996. The American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States have condemned the practice. Yet an estimated 6 million dogs in this country spend most of their lives chained up.

Wilson will take no breaks during his stint, but he will have access to food and water, as the law requires for dogs.

"That's one of the few protections," Wilson said. "But many times chained dogs can end up seriously injuring or even strangling themselves."

Nationally, 110 cities and counties, including Orange, have limits on tethering.

While the Wilsons hope Seminole will follow suit, Morgan Woodward, the county's animal-services manager, said changes are still being researched.

The biggest problem, he said, is in "lower-income areas where they can't afford to put a fence around their home but want to have an animal as a pet."

Ok this is all fine and dandy but what about the dogs that can escape a fence. It does not mean it is a bad dog but maybe a bored dog. So what about those dogs? It is more humane to keep them in a kennel all day. No I am not knocking it, just posing a question...

Let the retard eat some dogfood, and see what he thinks about that. He will want to pass a law to ban dogfood, because he thinks it tastes bad.

I wonder if we could subsequently stick him in a standard-sized crate for 8+ hours to see which he determines is the "lesser of the two evils"...

(Not knocking either practice, as I make use of both. But I'd rather be tethered in the fresh air and sunshine if I had to choose)

I know a show lady who shows samoya's(sp?) and she kennels them 9 hours a day while she is at work. I have to say if I had to choose between that or being properly chained outside on at least a 12ft. chain I would choose the chain. These are dogs not people. The problem with society and animals is that most people wanna treat animals like people.

at this point i think he should be labeled vicious and dangerous to society because he's been on that chain for 8 hours, the law should force him to remain kenneled up for the remainder of his life and always under adult supervision whenever around kids, freaking fool he is, i hope he got a nice sun burn doing that dumb shit

I agree 100% sent...As much as we love our dogs when its all said & done they are not people! I guess the next thing people will complain about is feeding dogs raw meat or keeping them outside period, chained or not.. Outside of his stupidty part of the reason that M. Vick is locked up right now is because a certain segment of americans think of dogs as human.. I loved my dog Lucas to death and would choose him over 90% sent of the people I know, but he is still a dog...

The problem that JQP doesnt understand is that high drive dogs MUST be contained properly. Ive seen bulldogs eat through hard plastic kennels on a 15 minute car ride and bend metal kennels and escape just as fast. For many dog owners, chains are the only option. Now I understand JQP's answer to that would be to get rid of the dog in question but what kind of shit is that? The bottom line is 99.999% of pet owners will never understand what it takes to own a working breed. Period. The guy that chained himself up to look like a hero did nothing more than make himself look like an ass to those of us who know better. YIS.
