I think a do's and don'ts thread about the APBT would be helpfull to those who do not know any better...
SO what are THE do's and DON'Ts of the APBT?

Do's and dont's as far as what? Breeding, conditioning, or what? Its a very good idea just trying to get more specific with it :)

I think it can be anything you might want a newbie to know.
For instance:
DO get yourself a breaking stick and know how to use it.
DON'T leave your dogs together unsupervised. Never trust a pit bull not to fight.

DO educate yourself before buying into, and make sure it is a worthy breeder!
DO NOT support your BYB's or puppy peddlers. If you do then the breed will die.
If you see somebody that feels the need to have to advertise on the internet, chances are they are no good to begin with. A true breeder will have homes lines up previous to breeding, and they will not be to just "any" home.
If the person is selling in the newspaper, they are a BYB
If the person is making a generous profit, they are a BYB
If they are found with sign in front of their house or in the Wal-Mart parking lot, they are a BYB
There are many other indicators, but those are the most popular, I would believe!

DO make sure you know the length of your dogs chain. Make sure it cant hang itself by jumping a fence or or down a deck.
DO make sure your dog can always reach its water.
DO make sure your dog cant get tangled on their chain leaving them exposed to the elements or not being able to reach their water.
DONT over work your dog in the summer.

OK well here is a few things I have found helpfull over the years.
Know how to properly use a breaking stick because no matter how careful you are accidents are going to happen. Thats why they call them accidents.
Always check your chain/hardware atleast once a day.
Never leave them unattended while on a springpole or treadmill.
Feed the best quality food you can buy.
Fresh water everyday, when its hot change water 2 times a day
Never let your APBT to share a food bowl with another dog no matter how "sweet" you think he or she is.
Dont flaunt what you have the people that need to know already do or will with hard work.
Always be true to your practices regarding the dogs and they will make you proud.
These are a few things that you should know when keeping or breeding the APBT.:)

DO as much as you can with your dog to help the breed, in whatever way that is possible.
DO NOT do stupid things to make it look worse. Feeding BSL is all that does.
DO exercise your bulldogs everyday, a healthy well exercised dog is a happy dog.
DO NOT allow your dog to be a couch potato. That calls for an unhappy dog.
DO make sure that your dog is well socialized with other people
DO NOT take your dog to dog parks or any parks for that matter
DO make sure your dog is properly contained at all times
DO NOT let your dog run free
DO make sure your hardware is checked often and is properly secure and heavy duty for this breed.
DO NOT use cheap confinement methods (walmart) to secure your dog. It will never hold

Don't get impatience with your dog, don't put too much presser on him too early, let your puppy be a puppy.
Don't breed a dog just because you have one.
Don't loose good friends and dogs over pride.

Do things with your apbt to promote the breed such as Therapy work.
Do try and educate the public and dispel all of the myths that are out there such as their brains get too big for their heads and they go crazy, their jaws lock, etc...,etc....
Do some kind of work with your dog, and exercise them often.
Do always make sure they are properly confined.
Do make sure you have a break stick and know how to use one.
Do put your dog through some kind of obedience lessons. Group lessons preferable. It is good for other people to see how obedient these dogs can be. Besides that, most don't even know what one looks like.
Don't ever leave your dog unsupervised with your child. Small children can be confused for prey.
Don't ever take your apbt to a dog park.
Don't leave two apbts unsupervised alone at home. Never trust them not to fight.
Don't breed your dogs right now because the shelters are overrun with homeless apbts that are perfectly good pets.
If you do breed your dog...DON'T ever sell or give one to someone you have doubts about being able to properly care for the dog. And if you do breed, be a real breeder and be prepared to take any puppy back instead of allowing it to go to the shelter

If you have a dog that confuses babys/small children with prey cull that bastard. I have never had a dog like that.... must be one of those myths you were talkin about. As far as not breeding your dog thats not for you or I to say as its not our dog and it has nothing to do with the topic at hand (only personal prefrence). How about dont peddle.

Thank you Texas Dogger. I wasn't referring to my dog, but maybe a newbies dog or someone who just doesn't know.
The way I look at it is why take a chance in general. Dogs can't reason, but people can. People shouldn't give their dog the chance to make a wrong decision.
About the breeding thing, I guess you are right. Don't peddle and don't breed to try and make a living off your dogs. Have homes (the right ones) already chosen before you breed to make sure there are no unwanted dogs. But then, that would be my preference. Can't tell others what to do.

DO be honest with what you have. Don't set your dog up to fail by treating him like a stuffed animal.
DON'T exploit your dog for the sake of your reputation.
DO accept that some people just flat out don't like pit bulls.. But,
DON'T ever let your dog be the reason why.
And, most of all...
DO love your dog...

several reputable breeders have had signs in their yard. i agree with the rest of it though. i would also agree that putting a sign in your yard these days would be detrimental to you and your dogs' preservation.

on the sign idea
Do not put up a Dangerous Dogs sign, etc.....can be seen as admission
DO put up a NO TRESPASSING sign. Same point made with no admission of guilt.

DO join Pit Bull forums to learn what you can from them.
DON'T get so wrapped up in them that you lose sleep because of the latest Internet squabble. If that happens, its time to get off the computer and take your dog for a walk.
DO read and listen, continue to soak up as much info as you can.
DON'T think you've ever learned everything you can learn about this breed, and DON'T think your learning makes you immune from making mistakes, or even learning a lesson or two from newbies.

For the vast majority of people...
Don't acquire a Pit Bull. Too many issues involved in owning the breed now.

Really good thread and ALL the good ones are taken!:p
How about:
DON'T forget that YOU are the only friend your dog really needs!
DO be responsible and KNOW what you are getting BEFORE you say you want an ABPT. They aren't disposable just because you didn't have a clue!
