Probably this question has been asked before, but what kind of dog do you prefer and why, a game dog or a dog with a hard mouth/finisher, it was well known that the majority of matches pre 1976 didnt even go past the 30min mark, in places where the sport is still legal, and dogs now days in the sport, are less and less game, but there are pretty impressive hard mouth and finisher dogs out there. I would honestly prefer a dog with a hard mouth/finisher.Let the thunder begin lol.................

A hard mouth won't get the dog very far . It's been told a lot of times that a dog bites hard because it wants to bite hard . What will a dog without gameness do when a GAME one still comes after him ? over and over again ? I say a dog with gameness first , and than ability , mouth , wind ....

I'd have to agree with koening. Gameness first. I've heard of dogs (pre-76) who would crush the opponent from muzzle to stifle but the funny fighting GAME dog would keep crossing, grab a piece of skin and hold on. Guess who won the match? It wasnt the frustrated "finisher" I can promise you that. Not saying there werent dogs out there that could get it done with mouth alone because we all know there were, but I'd take a deep game dog w/ decent ability over a rough cur anyday of the week.

The thing about a ruff cur is you could run into an equaly ruff curr. Then its a race over the wall. Give me a good ol gamedog. Also you feel good about breeding a Gamedog. Youre ruff curr you will always have questions about.

I'll take a good game dog any day. There the ones that'll do whatever it takes to cross the line everytime. Were as a rough hard mouthed dog is more likely to stand the line.

seems like the lines known for that ones have the lower %'s and the higher % ones have less of the other.
i would have to say gameness because that is wat sets this breed apart from all others. i mean to me gameness is wat originally attracted me to this breed. there heart makes them wat they are. without gameness they would be just another dog

Gameness plain and simple is the most important quality. Bone breaking mouth is nice but it isnt something to base a program on, gameness is. Its what seperates the men from the boys. These are the qualities I set my program by in order: Temperment, Health, Game, Wind, ability, and Mouth. :)

I am with the majority. You can add the other abilities through good breeding.
Once I was trying a line that was known for barnstorming, but was told before hand that if they ever come against something that could put out as hard as they did, they'd jump the wall. This was a true statement for this blood. Thought I could put some game into the line, maybe I could, just didnt have the patience. On the other hand, I have had a very game strain with low wind, and was able to add that very easily.
My grandpa used to tell me that a hard mouthed dog did not bite because they wanted to, but because they were scared. That is why they always thought of the hard mouthed dogs as a curr at the root of their heart.
They dog I like the best is a smart game dog. One that will pull a Rocky, wear the hog out, and then have their way. :D

personally i would want a combination of both. A game earsucker aint gonna do much to harm a barnstorming bone crusher. There's really only 2 outcomes out of a match with those two dogs, either the crusher will completely destroy the gamedog and kill it in the box, or the crusher will get frustrated and eventually quit. Now some of the hard mouthed dogs that i've heard about, i would place my bet with them in a heartbeat, even if they were going against a proven gamedog. The dog can be as game as it wants to be, but when its dead that don't count for much in regards to the money. Now as far as breeding, i would take that bonecrusher and breed it to the offspring of the gamedog and hope for the best outcome

Personally, if it is not Chinaman or Zebo......gameness is what i want.
That said, barnstorming/hard mouth dogs are perfect for beginners. Game dogs do best under experienced hands. A newbie is likely to have inadequate experience in after care. A game dog WILL require lots of aftercare experience if it is to see another encounter.
A barnstormer/hard mouthed dog will either finish its task fairly quick or take the exit door before real injuries can occur.
A game plug will stay, stay, stay but will take, take, take loads of it in the process.

Many an ear sucker wore a rough barnstormer down and finished them off. Them barnstormers freak out when not able to have their way with a head rider, and will exert that much more energy in panic, only to have a bad end. That's how it was pre '76 any how. But the same holds true for the hogs of today.
