I was wondering where did the brown and tan pitbulls come from. How did it all start.

There is actually a very informative thread I remember reading on here on that topic about a year ago. I wish I remembered the info. All the same try a thread search. Or maybe the one who wrote it will be kind enough to give us the info again. Hope that helps.

Do you mean the colors brown and tan seperately, or are you talking about a pointed dog, like a black and tan?
If it's just about brown, tan, buckskin, fawn, etc. colored dogs, I've got a theory on it. There was a study a while ago (and I really need to find this so I can cite it) that discussed wild dogs and natural selection on an island. A bunch of domesticated dogs were abandoned on an island, and then when people found them generations later, they all had similarities. One of the similarities was that they were all tans and dark reds. Just one of the survival adaptations was coat color.
This is just my opinion, but I look at this type of survival scenario as a breeding ground for true working ability. I would assume that the genes for those colors were probably in any terrier used in the forming of the breed and pops up fairly regularly.

Got this from another post, hope it is helpful
Black & Tan Ancestors of the modern APBT
We ran the following query on our CompuPed database of APBTs (30,200dogs at this point) and below is a listing of tan-point marked dogs in our CompuPed database, not including our own dogs or dogs from our breeding program. Some of these dogs go as far back as the 1920s. One significant dog in this list is Kinard's Buck who was the grand sire of Long's Baby and Long's Tuffy who in turn were the dams of such dogs as Midnight Cowboy, Chivo, Stomper, etc. Another very important one would be Bruce's Jerry, who was the sire of such important dogs as Corvino's Gimp and Corvino's Shorty who can be found many, many times in the pedigrees of almost any modern-day APBT.

I remember that thing about the wild dogs. I think they are that color because it is efficient in the sense that it doesn't make them too hot, for the most part it camoflages(sp) and its also a very plain and common color. Being wild not only affects coat color but also coat length and the size of the dog. If you look at wild dogs from all over the world they are pretty much the same just some minor diffrences to help them fit the enviorment.

sorry for double post
but for black with tan points from what I have heard(of course we will never really know) comes from 1 of the game terriers used to develop the breed.
