Not really because the catch dog would have to be around the bay hounds. So you really don't want a dog agressive dog. Trust me, that is not the time you want to be thinking " will this dog attack my others instead of the hog". There are a lot of dogs that can tell the difference between friend and foe. Some of the greatest dogs of all time would not scratch to another dog unless they were in the []. Others came home to a house with cats in them. It all depends on how you introduce them to the sport, and their own personalities..hope this helps

to add a little to what pitbull said, when you are training a dog to be a catch dog, you let them work themselves up by running around the outside of a pen worrying the hell out of a hog, usually a fairly young one. and when you see that their interest is at it's peak, that's when it's time to let them in the pen. doing this enough times will usually bring about the appropriate attitude when in the woods. and the younger the dog is when you start training, the better. i have a black mouth cur and pit mix that got her start when she was a little over six months old. and she has proven to be one of the best damn hoggin dogs i ever had the pleasure of feeding.

This is why many, including myself, do not consider hog hunting a way to prove gameness. A dog can take down a hog because it has been trained to do so, but it will not react to the other dogs while in the process. A lot of them tend more even less DA than ones that do not hunt at all. But, all dogs are not the same, nor are the trainers or breeders.

Well, to say that just because a dog was placed in a box made them more da is not a "fact". It is my belief that many dogs are so hot because they are not placed in a box and able to get their fix, so they are lookin for it any way they can get it.

One thing is for sure though, once a dog gets hoggin in their blood, you wont get it out of them. Like someone else said, we start them in a pen also. We live catch and will use that hog to train our prospects. Once the hog tames a bit, then its time for a barbeque, and another hunt. (at least that was how it was. I havent been able to hunt like I used to as my body is kinda broke up, but I still like to eat!!LOL)

Have YOU ever hunted real wild boar hogs 3 miles deep at night and it take you a hour to get to the hog and see your (un-tested ) dog with his guts hanging out STILL locked on and look up and his tail start to wag and him shake the he!! out of him while he takes his last breath? Dont knock it till you try it BUT I bet HALF these Bad dog men on this board would Curr when a 350 Lber came after them But My dog wont. I am not saying thats the only way to check BUT you can see very fast if you have a game dog Or even a dead game dog. J

There is only one true way to "test" a pitbull ,and unfortunately its illegal here in good Ol USA, im not a hunter, but why on earth would you send an untested dog to a boar, if your taking a whole hour to get to your dog/s , you better get in shape and run or all your dogs will be dead lol.

You can tell you have never hunted, as you say. So if you have no knowledge, you should only read, as you are spreading no knowledge at all.

Well come on down MR in shape WE dont use bay dogs we sight catch and its in some of the deepest swamps in the south and it only happens once in a while they go deep and I dont care how fast you can run you aint out runnin a dog or hog. I have cought 12 hogs in one day in 90 plus heat in south with one 40 lb dog and he wanted more I was the one that could not close my hands any longer to help him. One dog three guys Id say the dog was gamer than any thing in the woods that day. I ment by un tested was yall think you cant test a dog by hunting. PM I will set something up bring your best dog. Well see. my boy has Hog rights on a place over 56,000 acres I think we can find something for ya on it. J

Man, good for you, for hunting 12 hogs with one dog and 3 guys in one night, all the same, in your 1st post that i replied to, you said , it takes you an hr to reach your dog, if it takes you that long to help your dog, your setting up your dog for failure i dont care how ace your dog is, 2 hogs on him would be enough to tear em up and you would find a dead dog, knowing how dangerous it could be to hunt hog, i would never let my dog go alone and hunt em, I would rather use non Da dogs like black mouth curs, catalouas and such, that way they have a much better chance to get the hog and not get hurt in the process and yes, you cant test a dog for gameness by making it chase a hog.

What ever dude I am not going into a pissing match with you. And I also said it does not happen often that it takes that long but when it does Its nice to know your dog will stay. And I dont give a frogs fat A$$ what you would never do. We have done it like that for ever where we hunt they dont want any hounds in the woods ONLY catch dogs It was MY club a still hunt club NO hounds Only catch dogs. And the dogs NOT alone WE are with them or coming as fast as we can. Please dont speak of stuff you know nothing but what you read or someone told you about. Its not becoming of anyone ( remember every coulture has a way they do things mine is deep rooted in the south and we dont care how they do it any were else) You do what you want and I will live my way ,but if you think Im bull skating ya take I -95 south till its to hot to breath then get with me and Ill show you how to catch a few hogs and it aint just chasing a hog its fighting for the real prize, and it aint like you see on tv it is funner. Some folks like to live safe, some like to live life to the fullest. Trip, sounds like your dog likes to live like I ride, HARD. Aint nothin wrong with that. Some folks thing that southern people are stupid, but as a southern man myself, I may not talk like Yale, but I dont have to pay people to do my bidding. I have recieved a few snide remarks on the way i verse myself with my southern dialect, but I am a country boy, and proud of it. Like a man once said, "If you dont like the way I'm livin, you just leave this long haired country boy alone!"
