View Full Version : Prayers please!
I would like to ask all of you here at GD.com to please pray for us & for our dog Tiger. Tiger was found listless this morning in his kennel. He would not eat, drink, had an odor about him & walked like he was drunk. We took him straight to the vet, who diagnosed kidney damage.
We asked him what could have caused it & he said he did not know. He was given a shot of Tri-Pen as well as a steriod. Tiger seemed to pick up on the way home, but then vomited a huge volume of watery, brownish maroon colored foul smelling liquid. I mean this was FOUL. It smelled like a rotten dead dog. And to add to it, it was projectile & got all over my new truck.
But when he got out of the truck he just drank & drank, which I guess is a good sign since he would not eat or drink before.
Tiger has an appt. at his primmary vet first thing in the morning. In the meantime, please pray for us, as the emergency vet said it didn't look good. :(

Wow sorry to hear ABK, payers headed you way :(
bullydogs & Marty: Thank you so much for your prayers. Every one counts.
cynthia: No, he did not put him on any fluids. We live in a small town that does not have after hours vet service. The man we took him to was a retired vet who does some shots, wormings, etc. but he no longer has a full service clinic where he can treat animals.
** Update: I just checked on him again & he is alert, walking well & still drinking, which is great. I'll probably drive Tiger crazy checking on him every 5 mins.! lol. We've got him in the bathroom now b/c I simply cannot have him barf on my carpet. He's vomited another time in the bathroom. I do not know what that stuff was, but it was the most vile smelling stuff I've ever seen expelled out of a live creature!

Oh Girl...this brings tears to my eyes because I know the stress and worry you and your family must be experiencing. It is so hard when you have a special place in your heart for a friend to know this. After seeing My Lilly go through 3 surgeries and the pain it just hurts my heart because I know yours is too!
I have already said some prayers for your pup and I will continue. I hope he makes it through and no matter what happens you all come through what ever is to come together, keep each other strong and know you are in my thoughts!
Much love....

Well I am gald he is doing better. But I know you know that he needs to be on fluids to flush his system out. I will keep him in my prayers.
maydawgs & coolhandjean: Thank you so much for your positive thoughts & payers. I treasure every one.
cynthia: I know he needs fluids. This far since his shots at the EV he has been drinking well. I know some may not agree w/ this, but I no longer keep lactated ringers & IVs at my home b/c here they are considered dog fighting paraphanalia. As such, if you are caught w/ them you will be put in jail & all your dogs will be PTS.
The vet says his gut is not stopped up & that by examining him he presents as if he had swallowed anti-freeze. :(
The good news is he's still up, walking well & drinking, though he is still vomiting that vile-smelling liquid. Does anyone here know what this nasty stuff he's bringing up may be? I mean it stinks so bad even bleach will not over power it's rotten, death-like stench.

Do you have any ideas of what he might have gotten a hold of. I know you mentioned anti-frezze, could it possibly been something else. Also if you live by nearby neighbors...never rule out somebody trying to poison your dogs. I know a few people this has happened too. I agree with you regarding the IV bags and stuff. Its sad, however, they do consider that fighting paraphanlia.
Tiger is normally kept in the house. However 3 days ago we put him outside to get him ready for a show.
We have no idea what he may have gotten a hold of. He was on a chain inside a kennel in our privacy fenced backyard. I checked his kennel & didn't see anything overtly suspicous.
The EV seemed to think he may have ingested something, as he asked us if Tiger may have eaten anything strange. We told him no, but then he asked how close our neighbors were, as he said Tiger is presenting like he has anti-freeze poisioning. He examined his gut & said he had no obstructions.
I just took Tiger out for a pee break as he has been drinking a lot since he got his shots. He acted like he didn't want to get up, but he finally did. As for his bathroom movement, peed a little medium colored urine.

I am aware of the "dogfighting" paraphanalia. But I do think that you should follow up with your normal Vet for xrays and fluids. Thats what I do do for my dog. But You know what is best for your dog. And I hope Tiger pulls through.

I will pray for Tiger, god willing this is nothing major...and will pass quickly. I had a similar incident happen last year right before a dog show, i found out that she somehow ingested some medicine i had for another dog. And once again, never rule out some bone head in the neighborhood trying to poison your dogs.

Hope all is well ABK! Prayers coming to Tiger as well.
cynthia: Yes, he will most certainly be to his regular vet first thing in the morning!
bullydogs: Yes, all we can to is wait. I am wondering if he will make it through the night. I just took him out for another pee. He urinated, but he is getting wobbly on his feet again & had to sit down & rest on his way back to the house. :(
215pitts: Thank you for your thoughts & prayers. Every one counts!!

you got my prayer.
im sure he will be just fine.. just be patient
Hello all. Well we finally found a clinic for him to admit him to. We drove him I don't know how long to Mississippi State University vet hospital & paying through the nose - $400 just to walk in!
They said his kidney enzymes are abnomal, but it does not look like he has anti-freeze poisoning. I'll find out more later this morning & will post an update when I get off work.
Thank you all again!

Thank you all again!Atleast thats's some good news that he wasn't poisoned! Again, hope he is going to pull through this.
Thanks for all the feed back guys.
I got an updated from his vet @ State. He said now that he is re-hydrated (vomiting took it's toll) his kidney factors look good. One is back to normal & the other is only slightly elevated now.
However he did say the ultrasound showed abnormal looking bowel, free fluid in the colon & enlarged lymph nodes in the abdomen. The vet thinks he this was brought on by one of two things
1: inflammatory bowel disease
2: cancer
He asked if I wanted to do a biopsy of the GI tract & I said yes. When the results will be back I have no idea.
We had 2 dogs that presented the same way about 2 years ago & it turns out they died from mold poisoning in Diamond dog food. I am going to scoop out a few handfuls of the food he's been eating for testing. He's been on Enhance for the last 2 weeks b/c the co-op ran out of Black Gold.
The problem is, where does one submit a sample to be tested ...?

hope your dog turns out ok things like this bring us all back to reality thats for sure my best wishes
Thank you guys.
I just got a nother update from the vet school. Turns out they've reversed their decision. Now they think it's probably leptospirosis. In the meantime they've run almost every test under the sun on him, to include several we didn't authorize.
That's what I hate about vet schools. Firstly, there are too many chiefs & not enough indians & secondly, they use any & all excuse they can get their hands on to experiment on your dog & you pay the bill.
