My Grandmother was in her late 70's when she passed away. She was raped in a nursing home here in town a year before she went home to be with God. My Mom has a bill in legislature right now which states that all residences in nursing homes must be screened and have their backgrounds checked before being admitted. A brilliant idea IMO. There are many many sexual preditors in nursing homes. One could be in the room next to your mother or grandmother. I wouldn't wish what my family has had to endure on my worst enemy. If you have a loved one in a nursing home you should really check into who's there around them so something horrible doesn't end up happening to someone close to you. Please, if this hits close to home for you, look into it. The Today Show flew in from New York yesterday morning to film the story at my Mom's and at the cemetery where my Grandmother is burried. A trying day for Mom to say the least but she really wants the story out there so others can protect their loved ones from these monsters. Ivy Edwards, the man who assaulted my Grandmother, was found not fit to stand trial and sent to an institution for the criminally insane. Last year he was released back into another nursing home with innocent people. The state attourney's office has been notified. They have about another month to prosecute him before my uncles, my cousins and myself get involved...The story will air on the morning of April 11th on NBC. Thanks for listening, DJ.

I just finished my clinicals this week at a nursing home and the possibility is there. So sad. I will set the DVR to record. I hope the bill gets passed. Poor innocent people that cannot defend themselves, how horrible...

Man, I am so very sorry to hear this. I am sorry for your pain, and will be praying for you and your whole family. I can only imagine how this makes you feel! Knowing that she is in a place where she will have no more sorrow, no more sickness, no more pain, and, I believe, no more memory of the sick thing that has happened to her. The bible says that He(God) will wipe our tears away, and in order to truely do this He'll have to erase that part of her conscience.
Tomorrow(or today rather) I'll put you and yours on the prayer list. I attend a church that believes in answered prayer.
If I can ever help, please let me know.

Damn dude, I just put down the local paper here that has a story about that. That's sad and infuriating, I'm sorry to hear about that.
Is that law trying to be passed right now? If so, do you know the name? I'm here in FL too, so I'm here to throw in my vote.

**UPDATE** The show is airing tomorrow morning on NBC instead of Friday the 11th. Its the Today Show. Im not sure who the hosts are but be sure to tune in. My Mom is Sandra B.
Pip, the bill is the "Virginia Thurston" bill named after my Grandma. The state still hasn't gone after Ivy Edwards but I think it would be better for all involved to let God deal with him in his own time. I would love to send him there to meet him but then my family will look just as much like a monster as that SOB does. Thank you all for your support and PLEASE check into things in extent before placing a loved one in a home. You never know. YIS, DJ.

How horrible! I'm sorry for what your grandmother, your family, and yourself have had to endure. Some people definitely do not deserve to walk this earth.
That said, the nursing home that my hubby and I visit with our therapy dogs did a full background check on us before allowing us to make visits. It is their policy to perform background checks on all of their employees and volunteers. It was one of the reasons that I decided on that specific nursing home for our visits.
I never thought about them needing to checks on the residents too. It is a very sad time we live in, that you can't trust anyone anymore.
