Hey All,
Thanks for opening up this thread. I have a question for you all.
I was just given a 14 month old bitch. She is not in the greatest of shape. She has been in our cold winter, underweight and has been treated for worms.
She is slowly gaining weight (she's at 44.5 from 42.0, 10 days ago)
Anyhow, her tail is bloody and she sprays blood all of the house. I currently have it covered with gauze and have taped it down to the gauze and to her tail. Sometimes, I think it's getting better and other times it is still bleeding.
Anyone have any tips? I took her to the vet and am doing what the vet said, but wondered if you all knew of anything else to make it heal faster and stop bleeding so much?
Thanks!

someone said crazy clue, but im not sure about that. They said it clogs up the wound and lets it heal over

Happy tail can take months to heal; if at all. Just keep doing what you are. You can also try a spray bandage or Nu-Stock if you cant keep a bangage on it.

Crazy glue....huh, never thought of that? Anyone hear of that or any other ideas?
I meant to add also, that she has not chewed at it either. She is not going crazy, trying to rip it off.
Others have said, because she had worms, her tail is like that.
Thanks so far, I look forward to reading more.

dogs need to be wormed every 2 months... worms is not like the end of the world.
what ur dog has is just a case of wagging its tail and hitting things keep it covered. make sure you get her spayed as well...
Crazy glue or super glue works just make sure it is cleaned out good before applying. Is it the tip of the tail that is split?

diggit: what exactly do you mean they need to be wormed every two months? Do you mean becuase she's had them, now it needs to be done every 2 months? Yep, she is going to get spayed. The vet thought her 'area' looked swollen and she may be going into heat soon (holy freaking shit) She will be spayed w/in the next month or so.
CRG:Yes, the tip of the tail. Probably the last 3/4 or 1 inch of her tail has minimal hair and is a sore.
So far the bandage and tape have worked pretty well, I just want the damn thing to heal so I can take the tape/bandage off and she can be healthy.
The next time I take off the bandage and clean it, I will see if I can get a pic of i so you all can see it.
Thanks:)

Thanks:)Andrew, your dogs should be wormed monthly. All dogs get worms, regardless of how well you take care of them. It's better to prevent them instead of having to treat them. I use Strogid once a month on mine, and make sure to have a flea medication on them to prevent tape worms as well.

Are we talking 'heart worms' here? I give heart worm and flea medication monthly. Each of them are in a pill form.
They're all up to date on all of their shots/etc.
Any help about the tail problem would be great too.
Thanks everyone!

No, I'm not just talking heart worms. I'm talking about hook, whip, tape, round worms, and so many more. Dogs get worms, you should seriously talk to your vet about worming preventative.
As for the tail, there's probably nothing you can do about it aside from keeping it bandaged. If it get's to the point were there is a severe infection, you may want to talk to your vet about amputation. I don't know what else to tell you about it.

Thanks Jaded.......I appreciate your help. I will ask my vet about a worm preventative. I have a great vet and I assumed that she would have informed me of all the stuff I should be giving my dogs. I'll ask when I go back next week.
Thanks!

Andrew, I suppose some of the monthly heartworm and flea preventatives may ward off any worms, but I like back-up, ya know? So, once a month my dogs get a dose of Strongid. If I bring in a new pup, he gets Strongid every two weeks until he is 16 weeks old. I have never had a worm infestation that required extra attention using this method.

regular sugar will stop bleeding for some reason it has a coagulating effect if its not like totally flowing and just a bleeding cut or scrape then compress the area to stop bleeding and then pack sugar over the area and keep doing it until it hardens in the fur and blood thats already there and stops looking wet then wrap it up tight for a while and look it over later....if it dont work youll have to use a product made for this application but dont use super glue unless its a fine cut that closes good if it is an abrasion or very open wound the glue can enter the blood stream, i would stick to natural things or use a product made to coat the area that hardens over it but like I said sugar works good for regular wounds to the flesh but bleeders are hard to stop if veins and cappilaries and things are involved, it might need to stay tightly wrapped and checked often.

Crazy glue works fine for cuts that need more than a bandaid. just be sure to get the skin and stick it together and not get any in the wound it's self.

never liked using crazy glue, i've seen guys use it before, and it just keeps the wound from healing, kinda blocks the skin from coming together, so i personally don't use it, wonder dust does good for stopping the bleeding, i wet it with my finger, make a paste out of it, and apply, and i always use bluekote spray, then if i can, i wrap it with a bandage of some sort.
for wormer i use ivomec, it gets rid of heartworms, and everything but tapeworms, and i'll hit em with a tapeworm pill every once in a while. most heartworm preventives work on just about all types of parasites.

Andrew P. Do you use a Crate in the house?? While youre away , when company is over Etc... Etc....??? If so, is it a wire type Crate or is it a plastic type ? I ask because wire kennels can be hard on these dogs tails. I have one whos tail is like a whip. More so than any other dog I've come across lol. This mixed with the fact that she is one EXTREAMLY stupid happy....just plain happy for no Damn reason what so ever type of dog leads to lots of busted tails (dog) & brused legs (me). Since switching her to a plastic Travel Crate type of crate weve got the bloody tails under control. My legs are still brused to hell. Lol. Big Game

All I can say is dont use super glue no matter what anyone tells you ...unless its a fine closable cut .....that stuff will get into the bloodstream if it is a abrasion or open wound and could kill your dog....if it aint stopped by now you need to go back to the VET.... SGlue wont help you no more.

My vet came up with this option for one of our dogs who had "happy tail":
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb262/JenPBT/bettetail.jpg
It's a large syringe casing that was LOOSELY taped to her tail. The hard plastic protected her tail when she whacked it into things. We just kept the wound clean and dry, no crazy glue or anything else needed. It took several weeks for her tail to heal, but it finally did and has been fine ever since.
Any kind of plastic hard tubing will work.

AND the it has to be dry with NO blood at all, or it wont work.

Thanks for all the responses everyone.
I have a couple of replies myself
To the person who asked about what type of crate I use, I use the wire crates. I have a plastic crate and I will most likely switch that out tonight and see if that can help.
From what I have read, this is not the type of wound that crazy glue would work on. It is the entire end of her tail. It is raw and open. It is NOT spraying blood like it used to.
Mister: I just talked to the vet yesterday and from what she said and what you all have said, this is something that will take a long time to heal. From the looks of it, it is getting 'better'.
I have putting on old t-shirts (Small portion of t-shirt) wrapped up around the tip of her tail. I put some neosporen (sp) on then tape the shirt to the tail, giving her some padding at the end of the tail so it won't get 'opened' so much. She does not bite or play w/ the tape or anything.
Thanks for all your help!
Andrew
