My boyfriend has a friend from work who has apbts and he has this one bitch thats just rough as hell. very game... da. she has to be kept separate from his other dogs... anyways she hurt her back foot somehow and it got infected. he took her to the vet to get it amputated and they had to put it off til the next day. the vets came in the next day and she had chewed off her foot overnight. and the damn vets charged him for the boarding overnight! shes one bad bitch.

I dunno. I'd say chewing the limb off another live dog would make her a bad bitch. Chewing a limb off herself is self-mutilation & that is usually reserved only for those who are mentally deficient!

I'd say crazy bitch is more like it.

What does gameness have to do with the dog chewing her leg off? You lost me on that correlation. (because there is no correlation)

It's an animals instinct, whether it be a dog, cat, mouse, etc., to rid itself of an appendange (leg, tail, etc.) that it cannnot feel. Instinct tells the animal that it's a threat to it's survival to have the leg still attached and especially if the animal has no feeling left in the leg, it's no big deal to chew it off. The purpose of amputation is to prevent the animal from chewing the leg off.

This dog was not "crazy" or anything of the like. It was just acting like any other animal would do in the same situation.

The vet was an idiot in caging a dog with a damaged leg without taking precautions to keep the dog from chewing at it.

And I'm confused as to why this is bragging rights..................

So, it's normal for a dog to chew off an infected appendage? Never knew that, but it makes sense. Thanks.

LOL. And yes it is. A badly wounded/infected leg (especially one with imparied blood flow) is a liability to an animal. In hinders it in every way thus the animal's reaction is to "get rid of it."

Kinda like when a coon or oppossum will chew off its leg if caught in a trap, its useless and probably cannot be felt after a while. makes total sense to me. Or like when a farmer gets his arm caught in a combine and no one is around so he has to cut it off with his swiss army knife.

Why did he wait so long before bringing her in to see about the infection? seems like he would notice before it gets so bad that it needs to be amputated.

well i havent heard of many animals chewing of an apendage unless it was trapped or pinned and in desperation to get out. thats a situation where the choices are survive or die. but an infected foot is alittle different, an animal would eventually adapt to a broken leg or injury, heal, or die. and by game i believe she was reffering to the dog not showing fear or pain and continued to amputate itself, which i wouldnt necessarily show gameness but i guess its the way you may look at it.

And that's another reason why people need to quit throwing the term around like a handful of pennies.

A leg doesn't have to be in a trap for an animal to chew it off. If this infection was so bad that the leg had to be amputated asap, 1) it is an old infection that the owner didn't take care of when he should have, 2) it is an infection that did not respond to rigorous treatment (i.e. antibiotics, hydrotherapy, etc.), 3) there was permanent nerve damage resulting in loss of feeling, and/or 4) there was severely impaired blood flow or none at all. In all of these conditions, a dog will lick and chew at the wound in an effort to either heal it or get rid of it. Dogs don't think like we do, "Oh, maybe after Doc does such & such it will get better so I best leave it alone so it will heal."

Anways, I'd quit bragging about "game" dogs. This site is being watched, you are being watched, I am being watched, every last member is being monitored....and by bragging about such stuff you are just digging a hole for yourself.
