Fargo,ND -- Rep. John Lesch, DFL-St. Paul, is trying to get a ban on five dog breeds passed in Minnesota when he should be working on the real issues in his district, not trying to be the god of dogs in Minnesota.

The fact is more children are killed in the United States every year at the hands of their parents than all dog breeds. Jeremy Johnson and Carla Poole are just the latest in Minnesota to be charged with the deaths of children. You have another parent throwing children off bridges down south.

This is a knee-jerk reaction to one dog attack in his district. He needs to address the root cause of the problem, which is the pet owner and not the breeds. We do not need him to impose his views or bans on responsible dog owners across Minnesota because of issues in his district.

The dogs are trained to be aggressive by their owner and if so, the owners need to be held accountable by tougher laws. You need to hold the pet owners responsible for their pets and not a breed of dogs for the way they are trained.

German shepherds are used as police K9 dogs, and they were the breed deemed dangerous 25 years ago. The real issue is these dogs are trained to guard meth labs, drug dealers or fight and they respond to that training because of their loyalty and willingness to please their owners. The scarred dog believed to be Michael Vick’s champion pit bull that was transferred to a Utah shelter is the most people-friendly dog out of the 23 rescued dogs they received. They have adopted out some of his dogs already to families. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune just had a story about a local man who has two pit bull therapy dogs he takes to retirement homes in Minneapolis, and Lesch thinks his dogs should be banned.

If you Google pit bull therapy dogs, you will see the real breed is not the perception of the breed brought to you by the media. Remember to punish the deed not the breed.
