I need help. This year I want to step my game up. Last year I started fishing after having no picked up a rod in many years. I used nightcrawlers and liver for freshwater fish and caught large mouth/striped bass and mostly catfish and crappie. I fish off of the banks of nearby lakes.

This year I wanna step my game up and move to rattle shad, but I have a problem or problems. I don't know what bait to combine with others and in what order to place them on my line. Where do I start?

It all depends on where you're fishing. Temperature, water color/clarity, moon phase, and season are all factors in bait choice. The universal bait is the rubber worm IMO. The 7" culprit is my choice. Pumpkin seed or tequila shad are the best colors Ive found. Also "Zoom" makes a trick worm that works well in murky water. Especially the white ones. Repalas work very well too. I could go on and on. Ask more specific questions and I'll be able to help you out alot more. Do you live in a coastal area? I've graduated to salt water fishing as of late. Sheepshead are my favorite. They're hard as hell to catch but they taste incredible with beer batter. Heres one I caught last year...

Rat tail traps are my favorite I also like the broken back stick baits. Garlic is a good dip to drown your lure in...Good luck

If I am in the mood to just catch some fish... I tie on the old tried and true Rooster Tail. This is my all time favorite lure to just have fun and catch fish. (I fish the resevoirs and creeks here in Texas and it will catch Bass, crappie, stripers etc..)

2nd fav for bass is a texas rigged plastic worm (motor oil, or pumpkin seed)

Imho, ratlle traps and crank baits work best if you are fishing from a boat, for a bank fisherman like you and me, better off with the plastic worms and spinner baits.

Now, if you are really wanting to step up your game, buy a cast net and learn how to throw it to catch live shad and minnows for bait. You will never go home empty handed;)

We use Buck Tails with Chartruse heads and Pearl Shad when we fish for Striper.
