I'll be traveling down to atlanta around the end of march to pick up a pup and i wanted to experience real southern BBQ. I'll be going down I-95 and then taking I-20, if anyone could direct me to good BBQ joints along those routes it would me much appreciated.
thanks

PS: I've heard of a place called Fuller's BBQ in fayetteville, NC and was wondering if anyone knew of the place and is it worth going

finally gettin yourself a dog, eh?

good luck, bro.

i'm sure it'll have a good home.

got a ped? pm me if you dont wanna post it.

p.s. - sorry i couldn't contribute to the OT. but i'm betting if you get on food network's website, you can search there to find a lot of places, reviews, etc. they do plenty of shows about BBQ and cookooffs, festivals, and such.

oh, and have a safe drive.

Well, if you possibly can, go to Lexington, NC, known as the Barbecue Capital of the World....If you can't make it to the Western end of NC, then go to a Smithfields in the East Carolina area. West Carolina = Tomato based BBQ, East Carolina = Vinegar Based BBQ...I love both....

Where are you located again? If you are in NE PA, which for some reason I think you are, I'd take I-81 to I-77 to I-85....If you are in SE PA, then I-95 to I-85, would be the route I'd take...

oh, and have a safe drive. Ditto on that.

you definitely want to come to sc for the bbq... none of that yucky nc stuff!! we have the good mustard-based bbq. if you are taking i-20 you could stop at maurice's bbq (which you may have heard of a few years ago involved in this big rebel flag fiasco) there is one on exit 55 in sc, ive never been to that one but id assume its still good. (youd be SOO close to my house, lol) there is also a good place called shealy's bbq but it would be off your route a bit... i guess it is all a matter of which kind of bbq you want :) have a good trip!

Here are two right off of I-95:
1. 924 N. Brightleaf Blvd. Smithfield, NC
2. 5050 Fayetteville Rd. Lumberton, NC

Good luck and have fun!

Speaking from personal experience, I'd avoid I-95 and the beltway like the plague. The beltway could add half a day to your drive all by itself.

If it was me I'd head down 81 to 77 then to 20 to Atlanta. You'd have to go west towards Harrisburg to start out with but DC and 95 in northern VA is a nightmare.

How far is DC from Philly? I've never gone that early. I hit DC at 1:30 PM which isn't rush hour most places and it was nasty. So I'd want to hit DC right at 3:00 AM or so to go that way. The thing is, its just not the beltway, its I-95 into VA that is awful too. Good luck whichever way you go.

Boi Boi, you have the best timing for posting this thread up here. I'm making the road trip down 95 this upcoming Tuesday and was trying to find places to hit up on they way. Spoke to some N Carloina residents that pointed me in the right direction, and I definitely gotta try some of the mustard bbq in S Carolina. If I find a good place, I'll give you a heads up.

I gotta tell ya, if you are ever in the Chiefland (FL) area, you gotta hit a place called Huckleberry's. I swear on my mother's life that it is the BEST smoked pork I have ever had in my life!!! You don't even need a sauce for it, unless you want to dip your bread in it. But they have awesome sides to go with your dinners and all is fairly cheap. Oh yeah, really decent sweet tea too. I'm a stickler for my sweet tea and will tell ya when it's not up to par:p What I like about Huckleberry's is that you just walk up to the counter and order, they put your dinner in a to-go box and you sit there in the screened porch eating it. They only have a few picnic tables to sit at, but it's really cozy in there. I haven't been in about two or three years, and now, I guess I'm gonna have to make a little road trip!

BBQ without sauce is the best BBQ!

Bojangles is really good chicken. :) Also, stop at a convience store and get either SunDrop or Cheerwine(soda), yummy!
