Portland,OR -- Most people teach their dogs not to bite. But there's a time and place for everything.

The time was early this morning. The place was Troutdale.

A 19-year-old woman took her dog outside and was grabbed by a man.

That's when the dog, a pit bull, came to her rescue.

Troutdale police say the dog bit the man -- hard enough that he let the woman go.

The attack occurred about 12:50 a.m., at an apartment complex in the 600 block of Southwest 257th Avenue.

The man is thought to be 25 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds. He wore dark pants and a black hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to call 503-665-6129.

Sgt. Marc Shrake, a Troutdale police spokesman, said it is unusual for someone to attack a person in the presence of their dog.

"Especially with it being a pit bull," he said.

The suspect was last seen running away.

GOOD DOG! Dumb ass criminal. Let's hope he doesn't come back and try to file charges. It's a dumb ass world these days. Too bad he didn't get a good lock on him! Probly scared the dog as bad as it did the owner.

Too bad he didn't get a good lock on him!WTH is that? Crawfish, you sound educated enough to know pit bulls do NOT "lock." We have to be careful what we say folks. JQP already thinks our breed has "locking" jaws, so we do not need to perptuate this myth with misguided talk.

That being said, I agree that dog needs a treat - maybe a steak! ;)

I know they scientifically don't posses "Locking jaws", but there is a reason for the myth. I don't have a break stick for nothing. Maybe I should have said "Got a good grip on him." My dogs, of course, do not lock, but if Huan gets a good grip on what he's after, goes limp and his eyes roll back in his head your gonna need a break stick to make him let go. I promise.

Crap? Whatever. Guess you never had a dog that would stick to what he hit. Hope you never do because you are not prepared to deal with it.
