Jaeger had his Herding Instinct Test yesterday, and he passed. Basically, they were testing the owner as much as the dog. The testing is done on leash. They check several things: the owners control over the dog, the dog's willngness to follow direction, the dog's interest/intensity on the sheep, the dog's method, lack of aggression, etc.
Jaeger had never seen a sheep before. So he spent the first ten minutes running circles around them, but they kept running away from him. The judge passed him, but barely. He had good control and focus on the sheep the whole time, but he did chase them a couple of times. The chasing knocked some points off, but he settled back into stalking quickly.
My husband took some video, but it is pretty boring. Just a bunch of walking around in circles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9gODTCh_6s
I think we will stick with ducks and geese from here on out. Those sheep can be mean.
