ive got a 10 month old female, and i plan on starting a routine other than walks, and fetch in the yard. that is kinda difficult with snow on the ground. ive found she has a natural knack for pulling sleds around the yard(my daughters LOVE this) but she is still a little young for pulling. any suggestions?

I would not seriously exercise a dog until it is about 18 months or so. My understanding is that overexercising a dog while it is still growing may damage the hips, elbows, joints, etc. So I would not sprint them, would not run them, would not have them pull. But a little fetch and some backyard play time is okay. At least thats my opinion.

As far as my 2.5 year old bitch goes, I play fetch with her for about 1 hour 4-5 times a week. She sprints all out so its basically wind sprints. I also hand walk her for about 1 to 2 hours about two/three times per week (hikes etc, in addition to regular walks). And, once in a while I take her swimming (i.e. throw a ball or a coconut in the water and have her retrieve) And, I will use a flirt pole once in a while, but she is not really into it. I will probably start playing tug with her soon, but ..... I may not.

So its mostly cardio conditioning. And, ALL of the running is on grass, soft dirt, or sand. Finally temps here are between 70(cold morning) and 90 (humid and hot). So obviously need to watch the dog closely so she does not overheat and die.

Havent really given any thought to strenght training. Dont really have a need for that.

So you don't give her any exerise? Only pulling her chain on her spot? This is amazing. She have to be very hyper. But if you don't give her any workouts than you have to give her some very very good food. But it's her genetics also i think. Very GOOD dog, this how a performance animal have to look like. You see to many hog fat dogs.

Not everyone will tell you how they work their dogs because it's really none of anyone's business to know. A lot of people put their dogs on chains, use the flirt, spring, tread mill, walking/runnin, some even half the dogs rations and give supplements (absorbs fat) or steroids and let the dogs run around. Personally working your dog is the only way to go, don't compare how other people's dogs look to yours because sooner or later you'll just end up trying to figure out what everyone else is doing and what may be good for their dog may not be good for yours.

Work your dog to the best that you can and if it's not good enough in the end than continue to work harder.

Flirt pole hand walkin and critter chasin is the only workout you need for one of these dogs. Just let em do it as much as they want and eat almost but not freely and youll see them rip up and fill out naturally and their wind will be naturally impressive from cardio everyday and their strength will be awesome from jumping and flirting with the pole...and a free workout like this prevents muscle bounding...look at lil' bit... shes ripped but very agile and flexible, this offers the best of both worlds with plenty of strength but still not bound up so youll keep the great angles and wrestling ability and motion control...its funny when fools let their dogs pull weights until they look like that whippet and wonder why the dog is sluggish even though it runs and gets plenty of cardio on top of it...well dumbass your dog is tired from working those muscles all the time... with so much energy needed for those muscles just to operate and the dog probaly hasnt had the resting it needs to heal them up and store up before a huge calling on those muscles in a show...the best thing with a dog thats muscle bound is to work it hard then cycle down with rest at the end and a pound of extra fat...so those muscles can have the stores they need to work...take that last pound off with rationing and the dog will be perfectly wet and stored up when its go time and on weight. Most skinnier rangier dogs have a different muscle group they use more frequently that works longer at less intensity and take longer to burn out...big strong muscles are great if you can get it done in less time than you have before you burn...but if you dont then your dog will burn up get lactic acid all up in there and burn out...keep it simple and natural and keep from the bounding and excess weights out and your golden...simple.

thanks everyone, i wasnt trying to pry. i have a female that is a fat 10 month old and im gonna start a little more thorough workouts (for my sake also), and i just wanted a little input. it was alot easier when i lived in the country, you cant substitute for all the fresh air and free roaming!
