well if you know how to lance the abcess and squeeze all the puss ect out of it and clean it out real good. it should be ok. but if you dont know how to or have the right stuff to do it just take the dog to the vet.

lance the wound so it can drain. keep it clean and open so there is constant drainage. puncture wounds can become enormous without the right care. and if the infection spreads to the blood stream, your dogs a gonner for sure. antibiotics definitely help, but if the condition doesn't improve, get the dog to the vet.

It needs to be lanced and would recommend the vet....it only becomes abcessed if proper treatment has not been given to it...sooo....

Vet ASAP...
sqeezing is not lancing...it will need to be lanced
And your welcome, I hope is ok!
yeah, it would have to be reopened in order for all the pus to be able to drain out. sounds like the vet is in your best interst, so i'm glad to be reading you're headed in that direction, as, if you don't know what you're doing, you can create more harm then good.
keep us posted. and best of luck

question: is the lump malleable or hard? if it is hard than that means there is not likely any danger to the dog. it's pretty common for hard lumps to develop when puncture wounds are healing. usually a cortisone shot will do the trick. if it's still soft, well it's vet time.
imo, and since i work for a vet, so yeah, i'm a lil biased, but better to error on the side of caution, and make sure it's all PROPERLY squeezed/drained out and then a round of antibiotics (possibly) started
sorry, didn't mean to worry you, but don't squeeze if there's no way for it to drain out. :)

also, ask your vet for a couple of large gauge needles so you can extract the puss in a sanitary way if it ever happens again. and, lending to the fact that most of us own more than one dog, it will. sooner or later.

I think the best thing you can do for a puncture wound is to keep it clean, and not let it close. Once it closes the chances for abcess increase because the wound needs to heal from the inside out. The outside will heal first, and naturally cause infection problems.

best of luck to you bud. :)
p.s. i don't think you had to worry about getting a lecture from anyone on this issue. owning more than one APBT means sooner or later you are going to have to deal with a puncture wound or two. it's the most common health issue i deal with when it comes to my dogs. that and worms. for some reason my dogs love to not only kill rabbits, but also eat them. which inherently gives them nasty cases of worms.

Not to lecture you or anything, as you said you didnt want it..I cant just ignore it now, the first time you said it, it was different, I mean shit happens...but not continuously! I know folks have their ACCIDENTS but, you are claiming this isnt the first time, and from the way it sounds it isnt the second neither. I would suggest, that if they are accidents, you figure out to have them properly contained...if they are not, well good luck to ya!

that IS the best thing: let it heal from the inside out, so yeah, don't let a puncture wound close, otherwise bacteria gets trapped, hence, the abcess.
some might not feel comfortable draining their own dogs, if so, then i would recommend going to the vet to make sure it's done properly.

if my girls brother were as careless as the guy you mentioned, i would be knee deep in his ass. carelessness and irresponsibility are the reason we have a hard time owning this breed. that crap needs to be stopped ASAP! what happens if the neighbor looks out his back yard and sees two dogs going at it? and then he sees what he may or may not know to be a breaking stick? and if he does know what it is, get your umbrella out and your waders. the shitstorm that is going to be unleashed is not something you want to be a part of. you seem like a fairly responsible person, but those types of "accidents" can easily be misconstued by a nosey neighbor to be something totally different. don't subject yourself to that kind of unwanted attention. many a headache and heartache have been caused by such accidents. don't evenly accidentally perpetuate the negative image anymore. man, it has to stop somewhere.
