View Full Version : Need ideas for more dog toys
ok so i am wanting to get my dog a new toy, something that will last longer than 10 minutes.
i was hoping some of you might have some ideas or know of something that has worked for you.
Stuffed animals are too messy and get gutted fast. He likes his KONG FRISBEE and wants to chew on it, i made the mistake of letting him for a few minutes and he chewed the corner off and would of destroyed it if i didnt take it away . His regular black kong keeps his intrest randomly but not as exciting as other toys. Ropes normally get shredded. I need some tough piece of hard rubber or something..
Anyone have any ideas ?

I don't know how well it works for APBT, because I haven't tried it yet..
But I had a Policeman who has a German Shepard as a partner tell me that he gets old Fireman hoses, and that his dog loves to play and chew on it, and it last a pretty good while...
So it's worth a try.

I go to Wal-Mart and buy a lawnmower tire, obviously not anything that is radial (you know, with the metal bands in it). Take it home and wash it, then let em have at it. They generally last for a while. Just an idea. Costs about $12 max.
hmm, lawnmower tire, interesting, i am going to assume the rubber is about the same as a kong ?

Bowling balls are great and pretty hard to destroy....
The Black kongs are are tougher than the red..and do last longer...tires work well...like stated use non radial tires.....
Some people use 3 liter plastic bottle, put the lid back on and let'em go for..some fill it half full of sand.....3 liters are harder to chew because of the size..but still get it on the cap part!

I used to have a german Shepherd that loved to chew, including the wooden legs on some outdoor furniture. He really liked playing with the heavy duty orange construction cones. They are usually really cheap if there is a lot of construction or road work going on around u.

build urself a springpole and get some cow hides. The dog will have trouble destroying it because its hung up in the air, plus he will get some great excersize
tried getting him to use the spring pole, he is interested in playing tug with toys like a frisbee and rope, but if it isnt a human holding it , he doesnt take much intrest..
lol on the cone thing

I also say tire but try petco or petgoods for ones designed for dogs. I bought my pup one that is fairly small and has a rope inserted. I guess the rope is for me to hold while dog pulls by the tire. Tire is about 8 inch in diameter and has a 500 lb something (lol)....i want to test or pressure protection but whatever it is I understood it to be biting power protection. It cost me about $9 and at least it was specifically made for dogs.
I have never used it but look forward to getting boat rope. They are very thick and durable (assuming) and since dogs like to tear rope, why not use a super duper rope? lol

forget all that crap,,, give the dog a deerhorn and i dare you to try and take it from him,,, all you have to do is try it and you'll see they love them more than hides,, and they last a good year on a small half rack

Make sure you cut the metal band out of the bmx tires. They are in the ring. Metal snips (yellow) work good for this.
i would stick w/ a petstore tire most likely...
what kind of hides are we talking about exactly ? I would like some more information :)

yea that would work, thats what im doin this year once the deer start piling in my house when the regular season begins
If he likes the human holding the other end of the rope.....how about a flirt pole? Mine like the spring pole, but they REALLY like the flirt pole.

i have bought 3 petstore tires and my female has destroyed them all in less than a week and she is just over a year old, they are made from the same plastic rubber compound and will not last long.

it is a good idea to stay away from deer as if your dog comes in contact with one, he will run it out of the country. Also cow hides are not good if your dog might come in contact with one. Both are very bad habits to start . Hog or wild boar hides work best as most peoples dogs will never come in contact with one unless they are hunting and pitbulls take to them naturally. If using domestic hog hide, try to use a dark colored hide as they have less domestic genes and have a much tougher hide.

You guys must be talking about some other sort of tire. Granted, I just bought the damn thing (3-5 days) but from touching it, it feels just like a real tire and it is about 1/2 inch thick. One possibility is that you guys bought one too small for your dogs. Another possibility is that my pup is still too young and has many other toys to play with to concentrate on this one. Third possibility is that you guys got gators...lol, lol Here is the site with pictures:

Anyway, i still recommend it in its RIGHT side. My pup is 5months so i bought a medium.
Oh by the way, since i read HERE that suggestion about a cone...well, got home, took one "laying around" in my street, and have had both dogs messing with it for a few minutes. Thanks, got myself a new toy for the dogs free of charge. Floor is getting messy but pup seems to like it most!

YUP...thats the one...and then there is one from Petsmart too.....I just went and looked, I cant find it, but it was at least 1 inch (if not a little thicker) and was about 16 inches round....had yellow lettering on it...
lasted no time!

Well, :D you got yourself a killa...lmao!
I just took the rope off the tire and realize that they start concentrating on the part with the hole. I can now see it is their focus because it is the weak spot. They couldn't do it before because I only let them play with it when i held the rope part of the dog. they only clamped, held, and shook while i held and pull. There was no real sitting down and chew type of play.
Well lady, you say hello to that killa of yours for me alright?!

Rocky's human
I don't have a gator but my 22lb boston terrier seperated the sidewall from the tread on one side in about 30mins on one of the medium ones. The same company makes a bones that looks like it is punched out from the side of a larger tire and is also about 1/2inch thick, the same dog was able to chew off the edge of the bone at the thickest point. They are strong toys but if your dog is persistent they will be torn apart. This same Boston terrier has chewed the top off a black kong as well.

This same Boston terrier has chewed the top off a black kong as well.Man them Black Kongs (INDESTRUCTABLE?) last me 10min, before pieces start popping off. I went to home depot and bought a 140lb garage door spring. Got some rope there too. 1- 5ft, and 1- 9ft. I put the 5ft piece through 8inches, and knotted it around the spring. I then put the 9ft through evenly and braided the rope. I knotted the both ends and put a knot in the middle. The piece was now about 3 1/2 feet long. Got some chain (1/4 - 5/16), and a "D" ring, and chained it to a tree branch, adjusting it to keep the dogs back feet on the gound. The dog has to jump up to grab the rope, but it gives enough, to where her back feet stay firmly planted. The dogs feet on the ground will give a better work out, besides; free hanging promotes kidney strain, and increases the risk of injury. (Falling off and landing on its back.) The whole set up cost around $20, and the rope can be replaced for about $9. This last quite a while, but I would suggest getting a hide from BoogieMan, because the dogs do love them. This gives them the pull back feeling, and tug all day. Also, works good with non radial tires. Use yellow aluminum metal snips, to trim a piece. Fold it in two, and put a U bolt through it, and secure it with a "D" ring, and large washers.

The only things that last any meaningful length of time in my home are kongs and the big Nylabones. I like the latter because I can dremel off the rough bits once they get well-chewed.

For my dogs I use a heavy duty tire form a factory , non radial of course , but very strong . I wanted to ask if the the dogs teeth can strain or get really "hammered" if they play with it to long. I don't want them to wear out their teeth and have dental problems after. PLS your opinion!

The best toy I have had is one of those big hard plastic jolly balls. You can fill them with sand or water to make them heavier. My dog cannot grab it so she goes crazy, wrestles it all over the yard. Over time I am sure she will dig through the plastic as it is pretty scratched up, but it is a good toy.
Anything rubber is good for tug, but she won't play with it if someone isn't holding it. I have one tirebiter that is over a year old.
Firehose has been the best material by far. Double layer it and quadruple stitch it and pack it full. She just chews away on it, very good toy.
I bought her an expensive, well made basketball for christmas last year and although she popped it quickly, the rubber held up to her chewing for a long time. Much better than the cheap ones I buy all the time.
I just tend to buy a lot of cheap basketballs and stuffy toys (I don't mind picking up the fluff mess) and different cheap squeakies for her just to destroy. She loves to destroy toys, I swear one day I'm going to open up a store called Stuff with Fluff lol.
