Yes, back about 100 years ago, You won't see a pure Colby these days with a red nose.

It was said that a red nose was sold a long long long time ago to Lightner but according to what Louis told me the other day that neither he or his father ever produced red nosed dogs.

well they did produce a few red nosed dogs but it was so uncommon that no one hardly knew of it.but i can honestly say in good faith that i did see a red nosed colby dog on his yard.and yes there was a red nosed dog sold to Mr lightner can't recall what the dogs name was exactley but i do know there was one sold to him.but colby have, can and do produce red nosed dogs but it is so rare you hardly ever see it.all my years i ahve only seen 2 in person.
Rudolph the red nosed Colby had a very shiny nose, and if you ever saw him.......sorry couldnt resist.

Next visit to the Colby house i'll ask him about the Lightner dog, it was just monday I sat with Lou last and I'll be damned if we were not just having this same exact conversation. I asked him about the pie-dogs / mostly white pits with the small brinlde patches ( I know you know what they are but others might not ) that they use to produce and that got us talking about colors ( Blues and such i'll leave it up to you to guess what he said ) and it came straight from him that they never produced red nosed dogs.
Almost all his dogs are brindle & white or fawn /buckskin colored , also the pie dogs have escaped him he said, hasn't seen one of those in years or a black and tan. Now i know he is getting on in years but boy.....he's gotta a hell of a memory. I love my sit downs with him, I can sit for hours and hours talking dogs with him. I by no means am Colby expert nor am I a best friend of sorts, just been doing business with him for quite some years now and before me he dealt with my uncle.
I will re-visit the red-nose chat and see if his memory sparks, though he did say it with conviction so i dont know . The Lightner dog might not have been Colby bred, you know J.P. bought alot of dogs right off the boat so it is possible that Lou is talking only Colby bred dogs ? We will see, im due to go bug him again to see my pup, 3-4 more weeks til he is home.

They're still around, they're just few and far in between. But come to think of it, I dont think I've ever seen a red nosed colby...
Here's one of my colby's...well she mostly colby, her mom was pure colby and her dad was mostly colby with a little red devil in there. She's just about 40lbs.
this is her with my 5yr. old nephew (6 now but was 5 in the pic)

I visited with L. Colby about 11 years ago with some friends. My bud asked him about Red Boy being a Colby dog. Got a pretty interesting answer.

OldTimer I got that answer. He told me that it was a rumor about Topsy being bred specifically for Lightner to have a red nose. He also said (Quote) Thats is some imagination people have ! No red nose Colby dogs were ever bred by J.P. or Lou. Those were his words.
And on the side note if its ok i'd like to hit you up with a PM after.

If it wasn't true, why did he put it in his book? Just out of curiosity.

I honestly do not recall that mentioned in his book, Lou stated that it was indeed mentioned by Stratton ( not sure if its in his book ) that J.P. bred a dog specifically for Lightner with a red nose but said it was not true. Lightner did get Topsy from J.P. that part is true.

It is in Lou's book, that's why I'm confused. Oh well. Can you pm the answer on Redboy? :D
