View Full Version : Facts & figures guys!!!
I am having a discussion w/ someone who says "all the empirical evidence says pit bulls bite the most." I of course know that's hooey, but I need some facts & figures to back this up.
Anyone who has some quick facts & figures or links to them, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

From everything I read is that it is really hard to come up with clear evidence about what breed of dog bites the most.
The reason being is say there is a city that has a population of 100 dogs out of that hundred dogs say 85 were gsd and he others were other breeds. And there were say 15 dog bites. And of them dog bites 10 were from gsd. So when it is statistic time it will look like GSD bite more. But in reality the gsd population is more so it is more likely that the statistics will reflect that.
Just like dog fatalities they say that 15 people died from dog bites. But in reality 15 people did die but only 1 died during the attack and the others were after the fact from infection and such.
Well JMO
agreed, Cynthia.
ABK, tell that someone, due to the fact the the APBT (and "like dogs") is the number one owned, registered and bred dog across the country now, it would stand to reason that you are going to "hear" about more "pit bull" bites as opposed to other breeds of dogs that bite.
An analogy might be, if the number of red cars owned by people was greater than any other color, the chances of them getting into more accidents would be higher due, meerly to, the greater amount of red cars on the road. same idea.
"Pit bulls" do not have the propensity to bite more, we hear more about pit bull bites, because there are, simply, more of them.
there is alink regarding this, but i have it at home, and not here. i'll check when i get off tonight. maybe someone else will provide it in the mean time.
good reading:

imo, simple logic: if there are MORE "pit bulls", then you're going to hear more regarding them, bites, included.

i don't have the link exactlly, but i know i read once that the nr 1 dog in the world on the "bite list" is the cocker spaniel. the second is the gsd, the third the rotty and only after them are the terriers, not even mentioned pitbull ! i will have the look this up, but we hear more about pit bites because people think it's a more agressive dog, it's wild or untaimed, they think it's nature is to kill everything that moves, so people are afraid, the media missleads people so from there on it is just a step to create the perfect bad dog.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/PAGES/statistics.html#Thedogsmostlikelytobite
keep in mind when they banned pitbulls in england they still had the same amount of dog bites per year...
also if you are a grown man your not going to tell anyone you got bit by a yorkie or poodle...
and third most of the info you find is bs put out by peta..and bsl laws..also every boxer and mixed mutt is a pitbull in the papers.
info in here, as well:
http://www.dogexpert.com/Dog%20Bite%20Statistics/DogBiteStatistics.html
and since MOST bites go UNreported:
http://www.dogexpert.com/Gif%20images/check.gif There are approximately 4.5 million reported dog bites annually in the United States (nearly 2% of the American population). The majority of dog bites are never reported to local authorities.
who is to say, with certainty which breeds bite MORE?
LOTS of media bias when it comes to "pit bulls", as we all know, ...

well i think this anwser as stated by Dick Stratton says it best. ''A american pitbull terrier is 100 times more likely not to bite a human than any other dog,but when he does in inflicts 100 times more damage.'' it is the truth and it is short and to the point.

Also you have to think about it. They (media) hardly ever report any dog bite unless it is a "pit bull type" And even when it is another breed you see the picture of a "pit" behind the news anchor. <O:p</O:p
And like Suki said a lot of dog bites go unreported. And unless they seek medical care the authorities will not know. <O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
And most dog bite victims that need medical care are usually done by bigger dogs. So all those little ankle bitters that "get away" with bites because the people do not seek medical care. And I am speaking in general terms. <O:p></O:p>
<O:p</O:p
All that I have researched I always find conflicting reports. Nothing ever consistent. You will always find another statistic to prove the statistic that you found wrong.<O:p</O:p
