Oak Lawn police fire at pit bull, impound puppies

Police gunned down one pit bull and confiscated nine others from an Oak Lawn home over the weekend after a dog got loose and charged at an elderly neighbor and police.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to Division Chief Keith *****.

When officers arrived on the 7000 block of West 95th Place Sunday afternoon, an owner of the 6-month-old pup Chulovato had pulled him into the family's home following the run-in with a neighbor.

As police prepared a citation for allowing the dog to roam the neighborhood unleashed, the 25-pound dog tore through a ripped screen and charged at the officer, ***** said.

"You can't reason with a dog," said ****, who said the officer "was within his full rights" to fire more than a dozen rounds when Chulovato and another dog who followed him through the screen failed to yield.

The bullet riddled dog staggered around the yard before keeling over, according to a witness. The other dog was unharmed.

"He was a trigger happy cop," said Joe ****, the dog's owner, who contends that the police overreacted to the mild-mannered dog. His young children were left shaken by the gunfire, he said.

The incident marks the fifth time that police were called to the home this year because a dog was on the loose, police said. A citation was issued during an earlier visit, according to ****.

With far more than the three dogs allowed under one roof under a village ordinance, police took nine puppies into custody and turned them over to Animal Welfare in Chicago Ridge.

The litter appeared in good health, police say. The only sign that the pups may have been involved in dog fighting were Chulovato's clipped ears, they add.

The owners say that the dogs were merely pets.

"We don't fight them," said ****, who has four pit bulls remaining in his home. "We raised them since they were puppies. They sleep in bed with our children."

The dogs were always friendly according to one neighbor who declined to give her name.

"The only problem is that pit bulls are unpredictable!"

I agree. It's owners like him the rest of us need to be fighting against as their irreponsibility are costing us our dogs.

However, I too question the shooting of a 6 mo. old puppy. If an exhuborant lab puppy bolted out the house towards him, would that officer have shot it too? I think we all know the answer for that.

And oh yeah, someone contact the AKC & fill them in on their dog fighting AmStaff owners with their dogs with cropped ears.:cool:

the APBT is not unpredictable if bred and kept to standard. The problem with this breed is those who refuse to maintain that standard and the propper care that they require.

This breed is not for everyone!

My Moms friend has a min-pin with cropped ears. I bet she rolls it with the chiuaua next door. Heh heh. The cop in this case was trigger happy for sure, but as stated, the owner shouldnt be allowed to own apbts if he's letting them run loose in the neighborhood. Thats just asking for it. Just because you know your dog is cool doesnt mean the 80 yr old lady who reads all the sh*t in the papers does.

Definately faults on both sides here, more on the owner than anything else though...The owner should know better than to let their pit run loose, especially since people have this view that all pit bulls are out for human blood...And the Policeman seemed to over-react, but I wasn't there, so who knows for sure. I agree with the person above, if it was a lab pup, the policeman probably would have tried to pet him, not shoot him...It's a shame, but let's hope the Owner learned a lesson.

I am curious as to how many pit bulls are accused of attacking someone when they are just happy to see the person. I know a couple of my dogs would run at a stranger with the intention of licking them all over from pure happiness to meet them but the person might see 2 dogs running at them as an attack and Duds does that whole lip curling smilie thing which looks like a snarl.
I know when mine where 6 months old they would run to greet and jump on anyone they could. If you didn't say sit or down you were fair game to jump on.
