Kristen called today and we were talking she told me she went to our local shelter to get a kitten Friday. While she was there she mentioned that I do alot of rescue work with pit bulls, and that if they ever had trouble finding homes for any of the pits that came in that maybe I could help. The lady then told her that all of those vicious animals were put straight to sleep. I don't know when this started because my favorite dog of all time Dixie(RIP) was a rescue from there. This just p*sses me off. What a b***H "those viciuos animals" . I know I should not be suprised but I can't help but be angery. I understand that some pits are not adoptable and that some will not get adopted and that they have to be put down, but they are not even given a chance to prove weather or not they are adoptable.

OK I am really worried. I take Jasmine everywhere with me she goes to the beach and to freinds houses so she meets and enteracts with lots of people and other animals. She is always well mannored and lovable. With that said Yesterday morning I was woke up by Jasmine screaming like she was being murdered. I jumped up and ran outside to see Jasmine standing at the gate with her tail tucked going nuts because my brother in law was standing at the gate. She was not growling but she was terrified even though she has seen him dozens of times. My fear is that when I'm not around she will fear people and we all know fear leads to aggression. How do I get her comfortable with people if I'm not right by her side?

Thanks guys but I think I got to the root of the problem. I talked to sam (my brother in law) and he said that he tried to come in the yard and Fat Boy his rat terrier ran in and attacked Jasmine. He got fat boy out and waited for me to come out. I was half asleep so I took Jasmine inside gave Sam the package he was bringing to the post office for me and didn't ask any questions. So she was actually scared of the dog that just attacked her and not Sam. She is only 11 weeks and Fat Bay is much older and very aggressive with other dogs. Even though he is all of 15lbs he has a 10ft tall and bullet proof complex. To make sure I asked Sam to come down and see what happened. I went inside and left her out by her self and had him approach her. He opened the gate and came in and she jumped up and licked him like she always did in the past.

Maybe try to educate them with regard to this breed or is this the policy of the shelter?...That's a good idea...Try to educate first, or find out if some legislation was passed where they aren't allowed to adopt out pits...Good luck..It stinks that the woman at the shelter is just as brainwashed as the other pit bull haters out there.

I plan to go down to the shelter and speak to the director maybe he will be reasonable.Just remember. Keep your cool. An angry person telling the director how dumb and wrong he is, with just make the Director close his mind and ears...A polite person asking about policy and trying to educate (not with force) a person on the APBT is going to have the Director listening a little better (at least, we can hope).

Binker thats alot of shelters policy. The shelter I worked at in Colorado Springs was a "no Kill" but it was kill for Pits. If someone inquired about a pit they would make them jump through so many hoops that most did not bother. ANd when someone was willing they would take so long that some dogs were put down and then the shelter was like oops. Also they vaccinated every dog than came in for DA2PPV, and bordetella but they did not vaccinate the "pits" And why becasue the director did not like them.
Also a few shelters here also do not adopt them out. Rockdale county, Dekalb county. SO it is most places.
And Simms I understand what you are saying about placing them in the wrong hands. But in most cases it isnt about peddling in the area. It is about irresponsible owners and the fact that most shelters just do not care or even want to hear about "pits"

No Cynthia you dont .......Unless the rightfull owner claims them they should be euthinized IMO. I do not support the revolving door policy of shelters APBT or not. The vast majority of shelters do not meet my min standard of care that should be provided for these animals they cruisade for.....

They have the same policy where I am. The problem is there are more Pit bulls than can be adopted out or placed with a rescue. Also most people that want a "Pitt" have plans of making a living off breeding it, they don't want a fixed dog. At least that is how it is around here.

I support euthinasiaSimms you have to understand the rightful owner is not always the Responsible owner. If more people actually microchipped (and kept their record updated) then it would be easier to get them home.
No I DO understand your POV. So please do not say I dont. Irresponsible owners and breeders got the APBT in the state they are in now.
On the other hand innocent dogs die every day. Do I think that the APBT is for everyone. NO. But there are plenty of adoptable dogs out there. It is the people that adopt that are in question. And there wouldn't be a revolving door if they screened adopters better.
The whole system is messed up. It is a bandaid solution.
Binker I dont think he is being rude more like brutally honest in his opinion. Dont make the mistake I did when I first came on here and get defensive. Just listen and take it all in. And see you have to understand what 1 owner does effects us all. And because of that some people are more passionate about it.

In many states the shelters will only release Pit Bull type dogs to a 501 rescue group. That is a good thing. The foster pup I just brought home is a good example, if the shelter adopted out Pit Bull type dogs she might have been adopted by the wrong person with the intention of breeding her. She has very flashy markings and she is large. Because she could only go to a 501 rescue she was spayed the day she left the shelter and will never contribute to the over population of Pit Bull type dogs.
I do not know how it works in your area but if a dog is in the shelter who you think should be rescued try contacting a 501 rescue group and see if they can get the dog out. Many shelters do not let you know that they can be rescued from the shelter and adopted out that way.

I fully agree with this statement, and will go alittle further. If one of my dogs gets loose and picked up, I would not "go off" on a shelter/ac, whatever, if they immediately euthed the dog. I support immediate euth. of a dog whose owner is irresponsible. If the dog gets loose, it is my fault, and I dont deserve to have it. To go alittle further with it, the dog could cause trouble that would get the bsl passed where I live.
BUT.... I feel that the instant euth should be practiced with all breeds. I am sure that there are many fine pet quality animals in shelters, but for the majority of them, life in a cage. with no "home" is no life at all.

I support euthinasiaI agree with you. If shelters would put dogs down instead of warehousing them we wouldnt ebe in the problem we are now. IMO 75% of dogs in shelters are not fit to be adopted. ALSO I think if people knew thier dog would be killed if dumped less people would dump dogs.

As far as I know in most places it IS illegal but how do you find the owners? Once some idiots dumped a beagle in my fence. I had no idea. It was dark out and I let my house dogs out to potty and the poor beagle got tore up. I KNOW it was dumped because the retards dumped a bag of food, a carrier, and a bag of toys over the fence as well.
