View Full Version : choosing a pup for conformation?

I have a question about choosing the right pup for conformation shows. I would like to get into conformation shows with my next dog. My female is currently pregnant, so I figured that now would be a good time to pick a good candidate. Just for the record, I did not breed her for that reason, nor am I a BYB. I do not plan on breeding this dog after this litter and plan on getting her fixed. My female is close to conformation standards, but she has a bit of a small head on her to be show quality. Other than that, she has an awesome temperament, and has a compact, toned body that is built to ADBA conformation standards. I outcrossed her to my male which comes from Jeep bloodlines. He is about 1/2 inch taller than her, but has a more pronounced head. He has a deep crease in his forehead and a very snub nose, which should hopefully offset her snipey, small head. Both dogs are very game with a rock solid temperament, and I already have three deposits for the pups (I wouldn't have bred without knowing that I can give these to good homes). I also want to say that I never would have bred them to make money or any other reason than to better the breed.

Enough rambling already, I just figured that maybe someone here could point me in the right direction on how to determine which pup, if any would be best for show conformation assuming that all of them have similar personalities (I know it would never happen). What do people in the show circuit look for in dogs?

Thanks

Well, normally I would say to ask the breeder to guide you, but since you're the breeder... Picking a show pup is not something that anybody can teach you quickly. All you can really do is learn the standard, stack the pups when they get to the age when you'll be making your pick, and grab the one you think is the closest. The only visual resource that I know about on the web is APBTconformation.com. If there are any people near you that are active in the show ring, you might want to get their input as well. Good luck.
