View Full Version : The problem and fixing it (BSL ect)

The problem is obvious, the way the public views our breed.
I remember when I got my first APBT, I was taught to keep him and my future dogs in my yard, not tell anyone what they were about and not bring them to dog parks, the beach, walk them around when picking my kids up from school with them or in the public eye basically.
We are in a different era now, obviously. The sht has hit the fan, everyone is scrambling to prevent a breed ban... we're all up sht creek.
I see all these threads on fighting BSL and positive for the public, taking the breed to the public and attempting to show them our breed can be an assett to society. Taking them to your kids baseball games, school events ect.
It honestly makes me cringe when I see these type threads getting positive responses. This breed was never meant to be in the public eye, it was meant to be for ourselves and maybe because the old timers really knew something, they knew it would never be accepted and they were right.
I truely believe those that are taking their dogs in public to show something positive are doing more harm them good. This was never meant to be for the public for a reason and you cant back track now, whats done is done, kids have been harmed ect.
This breed was meant for dogmen and when the pet owners started breeding these brick headed pigs and colored cows, our breed was all over the news everynight and the public took a stand on these clipped eared cows biting their kids. Can we really blame society for their views? Now these pet owners who on average still dont know sht about the breed and even if they do, hate where they originated from think its best to get their dogs out in public even more and try and get a positive image when they were never meant to own them in the first place
I dont like these soccer moms thinking theyre cool as sht because they have an "APBT" and are somehow experts because they've owned the breed for 10yrs and sell pups with OFA hips. You still dont know sht and are more of a problem then you'll ever know
Keep your dogs in you yard where they belong

Hmm, an interesting point of view. I can remember when no one knew what a "pit bull" was. Now "everyone" knows them and all about them. How do you put the "cat back in the bag"? So to speak?

Man how right you are. I have been waiting to see if some owners would bash you, just hasn't came yet, it will. People just dont get it, keep your dogs in your yard like Threat says. I see too many who cant do it(keep their mouth shut or keep the dog up). Have any of you noticed that it is not the so called matchers dogs doing harm in the public, it is the pet owners dogs who cause havoc, running loose, chasing kids, ect..and breeding dogs 'cause they look good. they dont cull the human aggressive ones either and put them right back in the gene pool to create an income for themselves( making a little cash is cool, but bred 'em right please). What I want to know from some pet owners, is what attracted you to the American Gamedog since you dont like dog fighting, or even the true origin of the American Gamedog, you know they will be animal aggressive. Why would you want that if you are not ready to be private(does not mean you match dogs either, plenty of breeders did good for the bred and never matched a dog, but kept them true to form and function)? Another thing I noticed is some of our neighbors, they hate American Gamedogs but will tell you if they dont know you have them, is their dog(whatever it may be ) is the toughest on the block, they dont know what tough is, until their dog is tore into by that irresponsible owners dog, then they want to get bsl, what crap. go get a PATTERDALE TERRIER, that way you can still have a bad ass dog nothing could hardly stay with without all the prejiduce that comes with the American Gamedog. have a nice day IM OUT p.s. think of PATTERDALES not PITBULLS(this might help eleviate a little, they are game dogs also)The problem is obvious, the way the public views our breed.

Gotta disagree with ya here. These dogs were very much in the public eye since the turn of the last century. They were adored, a symbol of national pride. Shows attracted people of different ages, races, and economic status. These dogs were totally accepted at one time. It's the AR folks and their willing accomplices in the media that demonized them.

Cringe all you want, if you are loyal to your breed, YOU will do everything you can to make sure the breed doesn't get banished. You better get used to it. What are YOU doing to make sure you can wake up tomorrow with your apbt? I don't own this breed, but you can be damn sure that I will fight BSL every day so that YOU can keep your dog. Go cry a fucking river somewhere else.

you don't really want to keep it private, you want to start drama and arguments. it's obvious what your agenda is here. causing trouble.
lmao ... they weren't in the public eye?? That what about all those pics taken on city streets etc. from the early 1900s?
Go check out Colby's site. There are pics of bulldogs in all settings from posed photos, pics of the family on the front step as well as pics of bulldogs hanging out on the street. And that isn't even touching on dogs like the Little Rascals' Petey, who was on a sound stage daily & his recorded antics w/ his child pals beamed into every flippin' American home in the U.S.
To puport these dogs were clostered items carefully hidden from sight is preposterous & goes against all physical evidence we have of these dogs.
IMO the change came when the ARA of '76 was enacted. THAT is when the breed started going downhill - when they stopped being thoroughbred athletes kept by professional dog men & pet owners & every thug that roamed the streets could get them. THAT is when the pit bull began to decline.
But as one person has already said "the cat is out of the bag" & there is no putting it back in. All we can do now is work w/ whay we've got & that is to put our best "paw" forward w/ JQP.

Exactly!! These dogs were NEVER a secret, they were NOT hidden from public eye. Never have been, as long as the breed existed it was owned by pet homes as well as working homes. Hell, even in PET homes they were owned as working dogs. My family owned pit bulls as farm dogs for at least 100 years. As did many other families. People need to stop believing the hype ( and making things up) & start looking for the truth.

I think ABK said it best...
Also, I don't think Michele was saying she is an expert...
To OP, you said yourself that owning the breed for 10 years doesn't make you an expert, so what makes you an expert? Why should we listen to you, above anyone else in this forum?
Thanks Minor & coolhandjean. ;)
As far as recognition, I think the ppl back then knew what Petey was. You have to remember, those years were the years of the pit bulls hey-day. America's dog & so forth. So yes, I think they knew what breed of dog he was.
But if we want to lay blame, we have to lay it at the feet of the dog men. Yes, you read me right, I said the dog men. The same men who made this great breed what it was are also the number one contributor for it's downfall. How? Let me explain:
Prior to '76 pit bulls were owned almost exclusively by dog men. After the AWA was passed, how did pit bulls find their way into the hands of the unworthies?? They just didn't get there by magic. Dog men getting out of the game sold them the dogs. Or they who placed them in the hands of others who sold them the dogs. Either way, the dogs getting into the wrong hands comes back to the dog men. Yikes. Don't like that when we dig a little deeper into the issue do we?
So if you really want to make an issue of it Minor, blame those w/ whom the problem started. But in the meantime it is not going to hurt to promote these dogs as "America's dog" again.
JMHO ...

let the bashing begin and remember an APBT that wont scratch isnt worth a fkn thing.hmmm now i would be one of them oldtimers you are referring to.and since i am not a soccer mom who has owned them for 10 years but a man who has owned them since he was 9 has had plenty of expiernce in both the pit and the show ring as well as breeding and doctoring dogs i think i will be able to clear some of your misunderstandings up. now you say they are only meant to be in your yard only, never to see the light of day or let anyone know you have them and this is how it was in the old days.sorry junior not true.you would catch quite a few well known dogmen driving around town with a dog in their bed of their pickup or next to them in their station wagon.you would also catch quite a few out hand walking their dogs all around for anyone to see.it helps a lot in the condtioning process ya know.the only thing that was kept private was the time and location of matches, match reports could be viewed by the masses via SDJ and such.the breed should absolutely be taken to public places to mingle with folks to show folks what this breed is exactley.now dogparks and such thats a big no,hell i have been seen several times back in the day with a good pitdog sitting in the seat next to me or out for walks with him around town.the thing is this breed has always had some form of a public life via matches, dogshows, weightpulls, books and the list goes on and on.you think folks taking them out and about are doing more harm than good but it is the other way around.in fact if it was not for Mr.Colby you wouldn't even be owning these dogs today he made it possable for the breed to be owned by the masses and i highly doubt you will find anyone willing to say he was in the wrong.the reason why it is in the state it is today is not because the dogs have been seen in public but because of folks like you who don't know what the hell they are doing with them getting their hands on them and trying to make everybody think their way is the right way even when it is the wrong way.now you are right about the brick headed cows so i won't argue with you there but i honestly think you might be one of the folks who are part of the problem not the solution.don't come on a public forum trying to spread around a bunch of junk, there are folks who come and view this site and don't know no better and think it is the right thing to do.don't try and act like something your not if you want to learn great but if you just want to spread around a bunch of bullshit YOUR more of a problem than YOU will ever know.

youre spending your time on the internet just like everyone else
taking dogs to the dog beach, parks, schools is what I meant by taking them to the public and I disagree with it.
Dogmen keep their dogs contained, they were never the problem, I've never heard of a dog escaping a dogmans yard roaming the streets eating kids, it never happened and this is the only problem society has with our dogs. How can we blame the view of our breed when theyve been eating people? These type dogs were not bred by dogmen

How can we blame the view of our breed when its been eating people. These type dogs were not bred by dogmeni agree older is not always wiser but then again i do have 69 years of hands on experince and that trumps all the book reading you can muster.when i speak and advise people i speak from my own hands on experinces not from what i have read in books.now i do agree 100% with you on the taking of these dogs to dog park didn't know they had dog beaches, and i agree with group dog training classes.i belive it is better for any breed of dog if it is just you,the dog and the trainer.absolutely the dogs should be contained i have advised many many people on how to do this properly, dogs have escaped though from dogmens yards for the simple fact that no one is perfect cept god and you can overlook something or it can fail on you in the mean time diffrence is a dogmans dogs would more than likely inhale some other dog on a chain hence the term kennel fight so it wouldn't leave the yard because it is to busy tearing into another dog.but on the off shoot it did escape and got out on the streets it wouldn't bite a person either like them 100 pound mutts the only blood they go looking for is dogblood no worries about human blood.and you are 100% correct on that these type dogs were not bred by dogmen.
