Residents of Lonoke will soon be forced to make some tough choices in the next month regarding man's best friend, thanks to a new law banning the ownership of pit bull dogs.

The law was passed during the Lonoke City Council meeting on April 12 and quickly drew the ire of many in the town, especially those who already owned the dogs that were deemed vicious and dangerous.

Not only does the new law prohibit the purchase of pit bulls in Lonoke, it requires that those who own the dogs must find new homes for them within 30 days.

To fight back, some pit bull owning residents are petitioning to introduce a grandfather clause to the law, allowing them to keep their animals.

"You know there are some people who are happy that we're banning pit bulls because they're scared of them,” said Kenneth Pasley, owner of Lemon Tree Café. “But the thing about it is, when you've got a pet, and it's been a pet for years, they’re not happy that they have to get rid of their loved pet."

To get a referendum up for a vote in the town will require about 145 registered signatures, or 15 percent of the registered voters in the last election.

By Saturday's end, the petitioners secured more than 100 signatures. Those will be validated early next week.
Good luck Arkansas.

Best of luck to them. I'm glad they're doing something about it.
