We are receiving consumer complaints regarding the Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods. We do not know what is wrong with the food at this time, but we have heard that animals are vomiting and experiencing kidney problems. Although the problems seem to be focused on one particular lot, as a precautionary measure, we are pulling all dates of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food from the shelves.

Please discontinue feeding all Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, and Venison and Green Pea Dry Cat Food.

We are working closely with the FDA.
We will update this website today, as more information comes available.

NO OTHER NATURAL BALANCE PRODUCTS ARE AFFECTED.

It is a big conspiracy. I am telling you PETA is someplace in this formula to blame.

You know, I have had that same thought nibbling at the back of my mind about the whole thing but didn't want to voice it and be thought of in the same way Mel Gibson was in Conspiracy Theory LOL.

One of the places, in Canada anyways, with the worst security system is the shipping ports. We know that AR activists infiltrate, for want of a better word, into positions of power so as to better further their agenda's. We can all see this happening with the mandatory S/N laws and the Anti-tethering BS going on. AR groups such as PETA have phenomenal amounts of money to back their agenda's and to promote their idea's.

You know, it would not surprise me at all to have these thoughts verified. After all, they kill more animals every year than any HS or SPCA and it would further their goals for the removal of all companion animals from the world. Kind of makes you go hmmmmmmm.

Think mine is just the regular flavor. It doesn't say either of those you mentioned so I think i'm in the clear. I just switched their food because I figured if I spent more money then I would be getting better quality from a company who made enough money to thouroughly check their products. Maybe this one is just a fluke(I'd like to think).

Foods,® Inc. Issues A Voluntary Nationwide Recall on Specific Venison Dog & Cat Food Products

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Pacoima, CA -- April 17, 2007-- Natural Balance, Pacoima, CA, is issuing a voluntary nationwide recall for all of its Venison dog products and the dry Venison cat food only, regardless of date codes. The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine.

The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by Natural Balance involving a small number of cats and dogs that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product.

Dogs or cats who have consumed the suspect food and show signs of kidney failure (such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) should be seen by a veterinarian. We recommend our customers immediately stop feeding our recalled venison products regardless of date code and return unused product to their retailer for a full refund.

The products are packaged in bags, cans and zip lock treat bags and sold in pet specialty stores and PetCo nationally.
No other Natural Balance products are involved in this voluntary recall as none of our other formulas include the rice protein concentrate.

Although the problems seem to be focused on a particular production period of the venison products, over the last four days we have notified our distributors and retailers by phone and e-mail to immediately stop selling and return all recalled Venison dog foods and treats and the Venison dry cat food. Venison canned cat food is not involved.

The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination.

None of Natural Balance’s other dry formulas, none of our other canned or roll products and none of our other treats are involved with this voluntary recall.

We continue to work closely with the FDA in their ongoing investigation.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at 1-800-829-4493 or email info@naturalblanceinc.com (info@naturalblanceinc.com).

The shelter I used to volunteer for regularly had 15 dogs on this food.... 9 are now at the vet after showing symptoms. This is really scary. It just keeps getting worse and worse! I mean, it was just the crappy cannced food at first now this is affecting the more high quality stuff too?

Yes, very recent. Sunday night, 3 dogs vomited and then wouldn't eat in the morning. 3 more had the same symptoms by noon that day (Monday) and another 3 by noon today (Tuesday). At this rate, I'm sure all 15 will be in the vet by the end of the week, unfortunately. :(

I'll keep you updated in PMs.

Yippee.......... I've got 800lbs of the stuff out in my garage cabinets. I sure as heck am not paying to ship it all back to where it came from.

Yet my dogs have been on the Venison & Brown rice (usually on the Ultra Premium but I switched for no reason in particular for a few months) for the past 3 months & none have shown any issues.

I'm not usually one for conspiracies.. but I agree with you on this one Atilla, I won't be shocked one bit if PETA is found to be behind this in some form or fashion..

Honestly, I'm becoming skeptical as well. I want solid proof that it's the food affecting the dogs in this case. I think people are just going to start jumping on the bandwagon now that the news media has outlined the symptoms of kidney failure in dogs thus they will try to get some money for themselves regardless of the food their dogs are eating.

In the meantime, my dogs will continue eating the DVP Venison.

Mia, trust me, it is the food. The dogs' (that I previously mentioned) kidneys are shutting down. Out of 100+ dogs they have, 15 are on this food. The only unhealthy dogs are the 9 being feed this brand and formula.

If you want details, PM me.
But please, don't take this lightly. Make sure the food you have wasn't recently manufactured... it seems that only foodbought within the last week or 2 are contaminated, according to Natural Balance.
