Go to Tractor Supply and you'll find 90% of the foods that have been talked about here.

Honestly, I switched my dog to Pro Plan from Diamond many years ago, and saw a change for the worse. It was so bad, I didn't even finish the bag, but donated it to the animal shelter. My dad uses Purina One with his little dogs, and is happy with it. (I think his dogs would do better on a better food, but its not my decision to make.)

I've got mine on Diamond right now and I'm pleased with it. I was using some wal-mart mess simply because there wasnt any where else that sold dog food here (other than grocery stores). They put in a Tractor Supply about a year ago and I finally checked them out about 6 months ago and realized they had a great selection of dog suplies...

Purina One and Pro Plan are a decided improvment over Ol' Roy, for what its worth. But different dogs have different nutritional requirements, so you'll hear from people whose dogs do well on a food like Pro Plan and then the opposite from others. Some dogs were bred to make do on a meager diet, so their systems get overloaded when put on a high-quality food.
Then there are some people who will seriously tout one brand simply because they don't have experience with better foods. Take us for example. We fed Ol' Roy and Pedigree and Dog Chow and whatever was on sale for many years, and our dogs were just fine. Until we switched to Iams, and from there we just kept moving up the ladder, because every time we upgraded, we saw an improvement in our dogs.

I would honestly TRY to find something else, Even if it isn't the best, there is WAY better foods out there than either of those. Some dogs may do good on it, but the feed its self is not a very good feed. It is low quality and cost effective.
There is 1 thing that will ALWAYS deter me from ANY purina product, and that is the fact that EVERY purina product has animal digest in it. Wouldn't feed it to a dying dog!

what would you recommend and where can you find it? thats the problem is finding somewhere that carries itDepending on how much you are willing to spend, if you cant find the food at Tractor Supply (as stated above) then you can always order online. We are able to order Nature's Variety and of course Timberwolf online, there are many others that you can do this with as well. And 9 times out of 10 if you call you local pet store ( I am not talking about petsmart or petco) but your local animal feed pet store, they can and will order what you want.
I want to apologize too I didn't mean to sound harsh or insensitive, I promise. I just hate purina brand!

And try the different brands' websites. Sometimes you'd be surprised. Here are a few off the top of my head:

Where do you generally shop for your dog food? Petsmart, petco... or local grocery store, etc.? What else is around that you think might carry food?
It really sucks that popular pet supply stores (like Petsmart) don't carry the good stuff. I know my local holistic pet stores but I don't know if they are out by you. Canine Commissary and Pet Supplies PLUS....
I checked the price for Purina ONE Lamb & Rice and compared it with Canidae Lamb & Rice. You're in luck because you will actually be saving money by switching to a better food! On PetFoodDirect, the ONE costs about $37 for 37lbs while Canidae costs $35 for 40lbs!

im paying 26.00 37lb for a bag of purina one lamb rice and have been buying it at walmart and can get for 21.00 37lb if idrive an hour to petsmart. but the only other feed stores around within driving distance is a purina food carrier and i have tried all the foods they ccarry the dogs wouldnt even attempt to eat them and they are like 11.00 for a 50lb bag thats why when yall started naming those brands i was wtf cause i had never heard of them i live in a very small town! in the middle of no where and have to drive 45min + just to get to another town that has something in it besides residential houses

really if you dont mind me asking how much does it run. and someone said that purina 1s first ingredient was corn or something i was looking at the ingredients today and they are listed as lamb, brewers rice, oat meal, corn gluten meal, poultry by product meal, whole grain corn, animal fat, non-fat yogurt, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, animal digest, potassium chloride, caramel color, salt, choline chloride,l-lysine monohydrochloride, brewers dried yeast, zinc sulfate, vitamine e supplement, ferrous sulfate, maganese sulfate, niacin, vitamin a supplement, calcium pantothenate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin supplement, vitamin b-12 supplement , garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, vitamin d-3 supplement, calcium iodate, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex(source of vitamin k activity) sodium selenite.

I think they were basically saying that corn was in the 1st 3 ingredients, which is really not good at all, especially when following it is by-product and corn again. You really want your 1st 3 ingred. to be meat, but we cant always go that route, so you woant to look for something that at least has no corn...and less grains in first 3. Having 2 corn in your first 5 is basically (almost) 1/3 corn food. So you just want to try to stay at a minimal with grains, and no corn. Your honest to goodness best protiens come from your meat sources. Others just come .......from!

I'll find my last invoice and let you know.I think its like $25 for the bag (20 lbs) but I also buy the canned and the treats. You get the cans by the case and the treats come in 1, 5 or 10 lb. bags.
