I think dogs are much more versatile than humans, it might take a little while but there should be no reason a dog wouldn't be able to adjust to city life, as long as that dog is still getting plenty of excersize

Never been in that situation personally, but dogs do adapt. It takes a bit of work on the part of the owner, but they deal. Loki was used to having free access to her yard when we lived up north and had privacy fencing. Since then we've lived in rentals with crap fencing, or sometimes incomplete fence, so she's had to cope with the loss of that privlege. She's dealing. LOL.

Jay, whats up bro...i'm origionally from MI. thats where I got Calypso. I've been in NY for 2 1/2 yrs now and Calypso is going to be 4yrs. iN MI we had a acre of land that was fenced and she could run and play, now I live in a condo so big difference. She adapted well. My advice is get the dog used to the loud nosies, meeting alot of people and give plenty of excerise. my biggest problem was getting her to crap/piss on concrete..lol..she was searching for soft green grass.

There is a diffrence between country dogs, and city dogs, don't let anyone tell ya any diffrent! LOL We've gotten a few dogs from the city, brought them to the country, and they act like they died and went to heaven. So much extra room, new things to stick their nose on, a bunch of "walking treats" any way they look. We had one, we were razzing the owner on, because when we would walk her on a 35 foot leash, and 30 foot dam, she had no idea what a hill was, or how to negotiate it. I walked the the bottom coaxed her down, 10' down the hill, she does a superman dive straight to the bottom. Lands on her front legs, they collapse, knocks her head on the ground, does a few summersaults. She might as well have jumped out a second story window! I thought for sure we ruined the dog, she popped up fine, and did it a few more times over the course of our time together. After that, we made sure she wouldn't jump off them and hurt herself, but on smaller hills (5' or so) she did the same thing. Took her 2 minutes to climb a hill my fat ass is up in 30 seconds. Hop straight up in the air, over and over, hop up, fall back, hop hop hop. Great workout, and absolutely hysterical to watch. "Your damn city dogs don't know what to do with all this land, and hills!".
On the flipside, we sent a country dog into the city, and we were getting calls because he was a pita to walk, scared of interstate bridges, highways, cars flying by 50 mph in general and would freeze up and refuse to get any closer. He is doing fine now, it's just a matter of socializing them with diffrent environments. Out here, he was fine with cars, even walking next to the road where a car or two will zip by, but get bumper-to-bumper traffic and horns, he was overwhelmed.

If you have any doubts about aquireing an older "country dog" and how that dog will adapt to city surroundings perhaps you should start with a pup and raise it to be a "city" dog.

I fostered a prego female that was used to roaming 10 or so acres (thats why she was pregnant) and she did fine...in the suburbs with a decent sized yard and excercise. I think (JMHO) as long as you provide the 5 basics they should be OK
1 Food
2 Water
3 Care (shots, grooming,etc)
4 Attention/love
5 EXCERCISE
