Hello, my name is Misty, I am the proud "mother" of an adorable 9 month old pit puppy named Tobias. He's my first pitbull, although I was raised around them and have had several other breeds. I have got to say he's the smartest dog I've ever had though! The reason I found this site was because I was wondering if there's something wrong with him because of his skin. I was warned by my breeder that the babies' hair is easily pinched out during play and that they might be kind of homely for a while. Lately though, his skin has been scaly and flaky and he has a bad odor, like musty gym socks. The anti-bacterial deodorant pet shampoo seems to have only aggravated it, I only used it on him twice. I had to take my other boy (rott/lab) to the vet for his arthritis and she ended up giving him a steroids shot for his coat. I hate to take Toby to the doggie doc if it's something simple. Anyone run into this particular problem before?

sounds like the breeder is an idiot and knows he is breeding Demodex dogs. Get him into the vet for a skin scrape asap.

Welcome to the pack!!!
As for your problem-Yeah I would defiantly bring him to the vet. It could be something as simple as a staff infection and needs a antibiotic. Or it could be something contagious that your arthritic dog could catch and then you'd be in a world of trouble. I'd rather be safe than sorry. JMHO

Thanks, made an appt. this morning, based on what I found out on the internet. I wouldn't have thought it had anything to do with the breeder, because both the parents were on site, and their coats were smooth and glossy. Also, A friend got a female from them out of the same litter, and she's beautiful. I wouldn't be suprised if it's something I've done out of ignorance, like feeding him food he's allergic to. Hopefully the vet can figure it out quick.

Welcome to our WONDERFUL site. Glad to have you. Let us know what the vet says and good luck with your first APBT. Give it the love and devotion that it is going to give you and if you pay real close attention to your dog you might just learn something about love you didnt know. I did and its called UNCONDITIONAL!

With the breeder saying things like that to try and cover himself it sounds like demodex to me. I was duped once into buyin a demodex male. He made a great pet but i couldn't breed him and had to constantly stay on top of his problem.
