Sad situation but I was suprised to see that the media took it upon themselves to correct this mistake!
Dog suspected in mauling not a pit bull (http://news.galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=03deb8b49f3b1709&)
FRIENDSWOOD — The dog believed to have killed a woman Saturday was not a pit bull, as authorities originally reported, but a mix between an American bulldog and a Catahoula, police said Tuesday.
Pamela Rushing, 50, was found mauled to death in her backyard Saturday.
A police officer had to shoot the animal to keep it from attacking, police reports show.
Rushing apparently was by herself at home in the 300 block of Meadow Trail Court while her family was out of town, police officer Lisa Price said. Rushing had been dead for about four hours when police arrived.
Friendswood Animal Control has two of the woman’s other dogs, a golden retriever and an Australian shepherd, in city facilities while the investigation continues. They will be tested for rabies or other diseases. The Australian Shepherd had to be tasered by police officers after police arrived.
A municipal court hearing to determine the disposition of the two dogs probably will be held before the end of the month, authorities said. The dogs could be put to death if it is determined they had anything to do with the mauling, Price said.

I'm glad they posted the correction. I think we should all email them & let them know we truly appreciate it as although next time they should reserve breed judgement until they know for sure.
Sadly, I bet 99.8% of the other media outlets don't bother with a correction.

I was surprised to see this too, and writing a letter of appreciation is a great idea! I think I'll do that today.

I think I'll do that today.im very impressed i almost cant belive they did correct there mistake ... so i for one did write a letter to the editor and i think its a good idea for everyone to go ahead and do the same i think it would be a real statement if his or her e-mail box was chucked full of thank you letters from pit owners. http://www.game-dog.com/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
it just might open his or her eyes who knows ?
It's sad how they blame pit bulls for every thing. they made it sound like all 3 dogs were pit bulls in the last reports.

Here is a direct link for writting a letter to the editor on-line. It may be published!
I tried but a zip code is required so I'll have to send mine snail mail.
Here's what I wrote anyways.
In regard to the story, "Dog suspected in mauling not a pit bull" published March 21:
I just wanted to send you a note that shows my appreciation of the integrity that your paper has shown in printing a retraction about the breed of dog responsible for this horrible incident. Being an owner of an American Pit Bull Terrier I have had to deal with discrimination of the worst kind. Every time something happens with a "Pit Bull Type" dog I cringe knowing that it reinforces the publics views that "Pit Bulls" must be banned.
Responsible owners of the American Pit Bull Terrier regret every incident attributed to our breed, even though we know that our breed might not have been involved due to breed misidentification, or from the grouping of many breeds and crosses together under one generic name. Many people will call any short haired muscular dog a "Pit Bull" when something happens, yet many other breeds and cross breeds that look similar to the American Pit Bull Terrier may be to blame. We, as owners of this breed, support Dangerous Dog Legislation and responsible ownership practices.
My deepest sympathies go to the family and friends of Pamela Rushing.
