I just found one of my pups dead when I went out to feed them. He is up on all his shots and wormer and appeared to be perfectly healthy. Well about 4 days ago I gave all of my pups some canned food and now found out that it was some that has been re-called, I have 3 more cans left. What can I do about it and is there anything I can give my other pups "just in case"???

Yeah take them to the vet and tell them about the food.

What was you feeding them?

I am so sorry, this is from Suki's original post...

Consumers with questions can call Menu Foods at 1-866-895-2708.

Local veterinarian Dr. Liz Dole says if your pet has been eating the food, stop using it right away and even if your cat or dog seems to be acting normal, put a call in to your vet just in case. Dole says they may want to do run some blood work.

Here are some signs you should watch for if you are concerned about kidney failure: lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting and increased thirst.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I do not know if the website has been posted before

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

But I would take the cans along with your dog to your vet. Also i would have the other pups checked out. Bloodwork and a full exam.

We have had a few animals brought into work today.

I just gave it to them once but it was a few cans of it. It was Ol' Roy and Iams. I burried the pup in a shallow grave just incase I have to dig him back up. I'll call the vet first thing in the morning and see what they say about it. I'm pray'n that it has nothing to do with the food but I cant think of what else could kill a healthy pup. I think it is the food though... I just hope my other pups make it......

Do you know of anything I can give them if it is food poisoning? I know they've been saying that it causes kidney failure. There was a lady on the local news who lost her dog yesterday do to the food crap that is going on right now...

On that menufoods website they list the UPC codes along with the flavors and the size of the cans along with the date.

But I still would be cautious if wasn't listed but the same brand.

I am truly sorry that is absolutely horrible.

Call up the company right now let them know of the situation and they my have some advise for your other pups till you can call the vet. You may also want an autopsy done to find out the cause of death on the pup. Just sorta reaching hear but what kind of spiders and snakes do you have down there, and how has the weather been. Could something venomous gotten to where she was?

It sucks... I only feed my dogs dry Diamond food with an egg every other day and raw steaks or burger on the weekends. The only reason I had the canned food is because I had a dog on med.s for a while and I was mixing it in with the wet food. I figured I'd give them the canned foods that were left over just as a treat and a way to get rid of them. Talk about it comin around to bite you in the ass...

Thanks everyone. I checked out the site and I'm going to call the phone number on the site as well as the vet in the morning. And yeah, the food was on the re-call list...

We've got all sorts of poisoness snakes and spiders including black widows, brown reclous*, rattle snakes, copper heads, ect. But I checked the dog house where he laid down and died in and there was nothing there. I always check all of my dog's houses daily for snakes, spiders, wasp nests, and ants so I dont think it was anything like that. Unless it was in the grass and not the house but I dont know...I'm stumped.

Honestly, I'd take at least one of the other pups in for a Complete Profile blood test which tests liver & kidney values. Although if it were me, I'd test every pup I fed that food too if that's what I thought caused the other one's death. The bloodwork could give you a heads up if something isn't right but the dog just isn't showing any symptoms.

And call a local vet & ask for a price on a necropsy. We do them for free (a reasonable number of them) as it's perfect training in a sense for the newbies in the vet field.

And don't throw the remaining cans away. Take pictures of the dead dog, take pictures of the cans, & keep them as evidence if it's proven that is what caused your dog's death.

The only thing is, with my experience with dogs that die from liver and/or kidney failure, there are warning signs. And that's a very young pup. How many vaccinations has it had? It can still get viruses such as parvovirus, coronavirus, distemper, etc. even with 2 vaccinations under it's belt.

I almost did take pictures of him but I changed my mind. I have already burried him now though. I took out the house that I found him dead in and put in another one for them. I still have 2 cans of Ol' Roy and 1 of the Iams. And I believe he has had 2 shots now but I cant remember for sure, I've got it written down...somewhere. I have 4 pups in one pin and 6 in the other so they havent been in contact with anything other than my big dogs, when they slip out the door and go play with them. Before I put them in the pin I sprayed bleach all over the fencing just in case so I dont think it coulda been something on that. I dont know....I'm truly lost on this one. I do know that it will be a hella long time before I buy any kind of canned food, IF I do.

But if certain brands are bad in the canned food...what about their dry food? Wouldnt that be infected as well?

Make sure and report your case, so they can add the tally if it's related.

Sorry to hear that you lost a Pup...RIP Doc Holiday....

on a side note, not to sound like a Conspiracy Theorist, but did they ever say what got into the food to cause this? Does anyone think PETA might be behind this sudden occurance of "poisoned" food?

REAL sorry to hear about your pup, Josh. :(
RIP little guy.

as far as the food recall goes, "supposedly" it's limited to foil pouches and "cuts and gravy" style, but, personally, i would stay away from all of the food mentioned on that list, just to error on the side of caution, til all this dust settles.
it's a nightmare working in/at a boarding facility right now, with over 300 animals currently, and over 50% of them eating Iams, .... !!!!!
nuts crazy....

again, sorry Josh.
i say do the necropsy, too. get some answers

I agree. If it was the food, the dog would've died from liver and/or kidney failure. And there are signs that present themself beforehand that the dog is extremely ill & no offense, but they are very hard to miss.

It wont bring the pup back but it may save others not just yours.

As with any thing canned, processed, or even raw things go bad, there are bad batches. that shit was rotten before they processed it. Any thing can go wronge with it. Wormers can go bad, shots can go bad. There are many factors to figure. Pesticides, vermin, cold, parvo can still happen, vaccines are not sure fire every time. some times dogs have reactions to any of these. Just like any other living organism.

According to our local newspaper, it's supposedly a rat poison called aminopterin, they used to use it to induce abortions. However, the federal government prohibits use of aminopterin for killing rodents here in the US. They don't know how it got there. Cornell university confirmed that it was in 2 of the 3 cat food samples provided by Menu foods. Seems a pretty slim chance something like this could "accidently" end up in pet food. My vet said he's got one confirmed case and another he thinks was caused by food poisoning. My deepest sympathies about your baby, he was so cute.

The rodent poison was found in the wheat/wheat germ that was imported from China. It's a legal rat poison over there.

I've not heard anything about that substance being used in abortions, but it is used in very small amounts in chemotherapy for cancer patients. I can't imagine it being used in humans to cause abortions as it could kill the mother at the same time.
