Australia -- A BRISBANE man could face jail if found guilty of cutting the ears off an eight-week-old puppy with a pair of scissors, the RSPCA said today.Inspectors from the animal welfare group seized the American staffordshire terrier south of Brisbane at the weekend after a tip-off about a cruelly mutilated animal.

The ears had been cut off to make the puppy “look tough”, a practice that is carried out in illegal dog fighting circles, RSPCA inspector Daniel Young said today.

“It's an eight-week old American staffy male pup,” Mr Young said.

“We received information about a dog having its ears chopped off.

“We attended the address and located the pup, obviously with no ears, and we've spoken to a person of interest who later admitted to chopping its ears off with scissors.”

The dog had received no sedation or pain relief following its ordeal.

Mr Young said he was appalled someone would inflict such pain on an animal, particularly one so young.

“I have seen dogs with their ears chopped off in the past, but I've never seen an eight-week pup with its ears cut off.”

The pup has now been temporarily fostered with a Brisbane family.

It was starting to recover and had suffered no damage to its hearing, but would be scarred for life.

Mr Young said a man in his early 20s was under investigation.

Police said any charges would be laid by RSPCA inspectors under the Animal Care and Protection Act, which carries a maximum $75,000 fine and two years in prison.

The RSPCA was hoping any penalty imposed would act as a deterrent to others.

“Magistrates are starting to realise that issues like this are not tolerated by the public and are starting to give heftier fines,” Mr Young said.

The RSPCA hoped the dog would soon find a caring, permanent home.

I saw sauch things here in Hamburg, very young people(14-16years old) with Puppys that had no ears at all. I ask them why they did this and they told me they have seen this in books and theyr dogs are fightingdogs. I think the puppys AND the kids are just victims.

well, I agree with what Blaizen said. The bastard should have his ears cut off. Maybe that will make other people think twice if they decide to do that to a puppy.

Good post Chia!

What I don't understand is this turn for a sudden coldness toward animals. This used to be quite the animal-friendly board (save for a few cat haters. lol.) but it seems like now all of a sudden "humane" treament is only for humans.

Well, I have news for you folks, I would not shed one wet tear over some cruel POS who got his ears cut off w/o anasthetic (sp?) for doing the same to a poor pup.

Some might trumpet that humans are of a higher state than animals & human life is more valuable & that is true. But that does not give humans license to abuse an animal & IMO anyone who abuses an animal should be punished to the fullest extent.

I agree with BlaizenJ, that guy needs to have his ears cut off with a dull pair of scissors, and no pain killer/sedation, just hold him down and start cutting. I think that is the way all crimes should be dealt with, do to the criminal what they did to the victim, but just a little worse.

It was just a vent. Good Lord man, do you always have to come on here and be such an ass. I'm just simply saying the punishment should fit the crime, in my own way. In most cases people who do these things to animals get a simple slap on the wrist, community service, small fine. In this case I hope he does get the $75,000 fine or the 2 yrs. If you had a problem with my post, you should have PMed me.

You can clap for yourself, it was a good post. ;) I just feel like the punishments for animal abusers are not harsh enough, that's why it keeps happening. Maybe it will take people getting their ears cut off, tied up to a tree with no food, water, or shade for a week in mid summer, or being beaten, burned, etc. for all the pointless cruelty to animals to stop. Trust me I'm not one of the AR, PETA, type people, but the senseless abuse in cases like this has got to stop.

Blaize: Don't worry about simms. I don't think he was intentionally trying to be an a..hole, he was just lending his .02. There has been a sudden coldness that has developed on this board pertaining to animals. Why I don't know, but I have noticed this in the last few weeks. Has anyone noticed this but me?

I have noticed it too but I think it can mainly be attributed to lack of independent thinking. For instance I have noticed that if a certain poster makes a negative comment, others jump on the bandwagon and it becomes bashfest. I try to ignore it for the most part, I write it off as kids being kids as most of the time it seems childish. I think this is the latest "cool" thing.

Good, at least I know I am not the only one who has noticed this!

And you are right about a..holes. Sometimes it's quite obvious, but in other times not so much, since you cannot read tone, inflection or body language over a PC.

No one said you were cold toward animals. The comment was made that there has been an AIR of coldness that has grown on THIS BOARD toward animals, but you were not mentioned. However, I will say that your little comment WAS pretty cold-hearted.

Also, no one has said you were an a..hole. What I said was you WEREN'T being an a..hole.
