View Full Version : Sulmet??
I heard mention of this drug in another thread. Can I get any info on this drug - i.e. it's uses, where one can buy it, dosage information, etc.
Also, this may sound silly, but I have seen references to "shipping disease" on some websites. I have heard shipping disease is the same thing as coccidiosis. Is this true?
Any info is appreciated! :)

I have only heard of it being used on cattle. Helps them keep there hooves strong and/or helps treat bacteria infections in them. No idea on dogs. You can buy it at any feed store that sells livestock products.

I too was wondering about this when I saw it mentioned.
Here are a couple of links that I found when searching...

You're not bragging or bashing SE. Just providing needed info. There's no shame in that game! :)
OK, I have done a little searching & found that sulfamethazine (sulmet) can be a treatment for coccidiosis.
BUT ... I have found 3 different vehicles for delivery - powder & liquid that are put in drinking water or tablets that can be given by mouth.
Has anyone had any experince w/ this stuff in any of it's forms? I like to keep something for coccidia around the house. All I have is unmixed Albon & the pups HATE it.
I am looking for something where if I ever need to dose them it won't be like wrassling a wildcat.

When i had my boy Zane shipped up here(michigan) from NC he had Coccidia.I brought him to my vet. and they gave me the pill form.I just put it in a piece of sliced cheese and he gulped it down everytime, he was 8 weeks old at the time.....

I add it to my dogs water every 3 month, all my dogs are fine..
Zane - I know you can get Albon in pill form, but you need an RX from a vet to get it.
I prefer to medicate at home if I can b/c of the sheer overcharging you find at vet offices. For example, I once had a pup come down w/ coccidia & the vet charged me $65 for a pint of Albon. I found out later I could get a gallon of Albon at the co-op for $25.
Chinadog - Thanks for the info. Which do you use? Powder or liquid? And what is the dosage?

Here is a link for some. I think you could figure out the dosages from what it suggests for cattle. Not too bad for a pound of powder.

Thanks. I am assuming they do not refuse the medicated water? I know mine HATED the liquid Albon. And is a ml the same as a cc? Please excuse my ignorance here, but my math skills & knowledge of the conversion table is absolutely horrible!
Also, what is the difference between Sulmet & Albon? Both appear to be sulfa drugs w/ the same or similar active ingredient. Could one put the 12.5% Albon solution in water too? I am just asking b/c I have a some Albon left.
