What is your opinion on dog's ears?

Would you leave them natural or crop them?

If there are any advantages or disadvantages that you would like to share with your opinion, please do so. :)

Natural...cropped ears tend to be dirtier than natural ears as well and I find its a waste of money. Lots of folks that don't know our breed tend to think all bulldogs have cropped ears so sometimes when they see a dog with natural ears they don't even know its a bulldog, which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

Natural! Saves you money, having to worry about cleaning ears every week and not to mention if I got a damn good dog I don't want to lose him to anestetic mishaps- A MANY GOOD PUPS HAVE BEEN SCREWED UP AND LOST WHEN PUT TO SLEEP FOR THIS REASON

My good friend lost a very nice pup off some good dogs when she never woke up, and yes, the vet was not at fault

I like natural, always have, cropped is for the staffies, I do like the old short fighting crop on some dogs like the OFRN, but cropped ears is for show dogs to make them look tougher than they are IMO

i like the look of natural the best, but also, it is awful to see a bad ear job. i've seen a lot of pits around with ears long like dobermans. what's up with that? the dog may still be beautiful, but they don't look like bulldogs. if they are going to be cropped, they need to be short. just my 2 cents.

I really would like my dog to have cropped ears but vet's want to much.

But when u really think about ur only cutting the ears! why it gotta cost a leg and a arm to do that.

and its not like u can just do it ur self because if u do u can get thrown in jail for that.

so uh i really like cropped ears but, natural is what i can afford

Natural is just fine (although I have a couple w/ cropped ears), natural gives them character and personality and expression. Some of their ears do crazy things and just make you laugh.

Bubba
09-09-2004, 04:59 AM
I believe a fighting crop is when it is extremely short, basically the ears cut off the head, I'm not 100% sure as I could careless about an ear cropping.

I have dogs with cropped and natural ears. Cropped ears tend to look more intimidating to the eyes of others. Natural ears have a more freindly look. I also notice that dogs with natural ears are cleaner than cropped ears. Both look good though, otherwise it doesn't matter.

Big River Kennels
09-11-2004, 02:26 PM
cropped, it is not stressful on the dog. it keeps the ears out of the way. I find that the ears are cleaner and that flies don't bother them as much.

I say natural, why waste money time ad put added stress on your animal. Not to mention it just looks better. Let the pretty boys with their pet bulls cut ears and lets keep the breed the way it was ment to be.

roggin323
09-17-2004, 11:15 PM
it depends on the dog ...some pitts have longer ears while other have the shorter, better looking ears, if you got the money to spend on a good pitt whats 100.00 more on a good clip job, never should a dogs ears be clipped for fighting, i have had 9 pitts over half would lay down there life for me, can you say that about many people you know? the ear cliping im 50/50

i prefer natural although I have a few with cropped. Unfortunately the vet that did my dog Shaker's ears (before I was a vet tech) botched it big time (ck it out in the gallery). I did Taker's (Undertaker) ear since they made him look like a coon hound, but those are my only two. The rest are natural & from here on out they will all have natural.

Bully
01-06-2005, 12:48 PM
CROPPED,THAT'S THE ONLY WAY TO FLY.NOTHING TO GET IN THE WAY. sometimes it's better if they get in the way. i'd rather have a dog lose an ear than have a hold on it's neck. the ears can be very useful if the dog just happened to get in a fight, by accident of course. some dogs will go for the ears. they tend to bleed badly, but not as bad as a bite to alot of other vital areas. the more non-vital areas that an opponent has to hold the better. it just ups the odds of your dog surviving if it accidently gets in a brawl.

Mudville_Monsta
01-12-2005, 08:52 PM
I really don't have a preference. It all depends on the way the dog looks or is going to look. First I take the parents into mind, then I look at the dog. Is the head small, do they fall into a good position or are the ears big or floppy. To me it depends on how they look on the dog.

I prefer natural ears. Bear in mind that IMO, some dogs (very few) look better with cropped ears, but at the age you'd have to have them done you can't tell. Overall, just not worth it and their ears give them personality anyway.

For my it doesnīt matter. But does earcropping have a reason? Is it usefull or is it onley for the looks, if so i donīt like it. What are the benefits from cropping your dogs ears and what are the side/effects?

What I do know from my own experiance is that the ears bleed realy bad when hurt, so thats maybe a reason to crop for me.

Bubba
06-05-2005, 09:08 AM
There is no good reason for cropping ears, and there are no benefits. With cropped ears your dog tends to have dirtier ears, not to mention that after the ear crop you need to make sure you keep them extra clean while they heal. Its strictly a cosmetic surgery that is pointless and needless. Most folks tend to think that having there dogs ears cropped makes them look tough. Waste of money and a hazard the dog doesn't need to go through, in my opinion.

I can appreciate both styles, but prefer a natural ear. A natural ear tends to show more character IMO. and protect the ear from foreign objects. The only advantage to a cropped ear would be less likely to develop yeast infection.

call me crazy but i still love cropped ears... yeah theyre dirty but its not much for me to clean them, and when it comes to bath time i put cotton in there to prevent any unnecessary, excess water from gettin in them... and when my boys had their crops done, they werent uncomfortable, hell they were spoiled even more then normal 'cause they got 2 go with my daddy so he could make sure their racks wouldnt come off (it happened to Diegoh once, he just shock his head and the rack on his right ear went flying) anyways, there were no bad side effects to them having the crops done, they just couldnt really scratch their ears with the racks, but that didnt last long... and i can STILL tell their emotions and dispositions through their ears... but yeah thats just me

It has been proven that the way a dog stays cool in the heat and under stress due to working hard such as running and other activities is the ears.Blood runs through the ears and cools down when the air hits the ear while the dog is running. An elephant cools this way also, along with a lot of other creatures. When you crop an ear,you are cutting away the bloodvessels that connect the bloodvessels that keep the blood moving in one direction.Your dog will not cool as well as it would if it had its ears. That is why the hound was bred for long ears,so that it could cool as it pursued its game for hours in the heat.So as a hunter and a hounds man,I want them to be just the way they come.

HAHAHA.....I love this question....I preffered natural with a pet pit-bull. As for other reasons, I crop all my dogs ears here in japan. But it is a pain to keep them clean and to me I do believe that the ears give the dog character. Especially prick ear. Check out my gallery of Nala,,,,with the prick ear...I love it. I like them natural, if they were doberman pinchers- yes, but not for this type of breed, I use too have 3 of them, but I like this breed as they are not cropped!! :)

I like to see only males with cropped ears b/c to me it has more of a masculine effect.

With the APBT, overall, I like their natural ears. Like many have already said, it gives them character...Though there have been pits I've seen with cropped ears that really made the dog look good, and then there were cropped ears I have seen that were "ugly"...
With Dobermans, I like them cropped, but not that super long cut and not too low of a cut...

Natural alllll the way!! They have ears for a REASON, leave them alone!

I've had one with crop'd ears, though i wasn't the one that chop'd them. IMO i think its ugly & only a fashion statement... I prefer function over fashion anyday!

I prefer natural ears. However, I've seen dogs with cropped ears that I liked.

O. Steven's Homer is a dog that comes into mind.

That is a tough one.....Depends on the crop. I have seen some w/ bad crop jobs and some w/ wonderful crop jobs.

Both of my dogs have natural, but I would own one w/ cropped ears if they had already been done and I did not have to clean and look at the wounds:(

Natural. I cant think of a reason to crop a dogs ears.

Personally I like the cropped look better. I know it serves no purpose now and I doubt I would do it again. But based on looks only...cropped.
