I just got a new pup and i bought dewormer cause found out he has worms. They are small flat whitish looking.. What dewormer could i use or is the one i am using good enough? It is in a yellow tube and it says tasty paste on it and you can adjust the amount given by twisting a nut like nob to the weight of dog desired

Does the worms look like rice or spaghetti? Sorry for the food comparisons
Rice = Tapeworms
Spaghetti = Roundworms
And it all depends on what the wormer you bought will treat.

Nemex or Ivermectin. The Nemex will be safer and easier if u have no exp. with ivermectin.

Nemex or Ivermectin. The Nemex will be safer and easier if u have no exp. with ivermectin.
Ivermectin or Nemex will not treat tapeworms and all Nemex is Pyrantal Pamoate which will only treat roundworms and hookworms
Uses of Ivermectin
<LI class=ArticleContentBullet>Ivermectin is used to control skin parasites (http://www.petplace.com/dogs/sarcoptic-mange-in-dogs/page1.aspx), gastrointestinal parasites (http://www.petplace.com/dogs/intestinal-parasites-in-dogs/page1.aspx) and parasites within the bloodstream.
<LI class=ArticleContentBullet>Ivermectin prevents development of heartworm disease in dogs and cats.
<LI class=ArticleContentBullet>Ivermectin can be used in an extra-label (javascript: void(0);) manner to kill microfilaria (javascript: void(0);) (microscopic offspring) in heartworm infected dogs.
<LI class=ArticleContentBullet>Ivermectin is not effective against tapeworms and liver flukes.

You need either Droncit ( only treats tapes) or Drontal Plus. Over the counter stuff isn't going to work for tapes.

Droncit. It's over the counter & given in 2 separate doses & does the trick quite well. ;)
Ivermectin does NOT get rid of tapeworms. In fact, I don't suggest using Ivermectin as a dewormer anyways due to the larger dosage required has not been evaluated in canines & Ivermectin is known to cause liver/kidney failure when given in large dosages over time.
If you use Ivermectin for heartworm preventative, that's great. But shell out the very few extra bucks it costs for a true dewormer. :)

I tend to agree with the you and the other vet on that one.The vet i take my dogs to only gives it as mange treatment.Oh well to each his own.

You can't get it here in NY, unless you go to a vet.:(

This type wormer only takes care of one varitiy of tapes, and not the most common that is transmitted from fleas.

GEt safeguard or panacur, they both get rid of all worms including tapeworm, 1cc per 10lb, once every day,3 days in a row, you wont se no mo worms. Good luck!
Ps, IF you have doubts , go to your vet and get a fecal test, just incase.

For tapeworms alone I use D-Worm™ Tapeworm for Dogs and Puppies which contains "praziquantel".

other than that I use Safe-Guard® Canine
Fenbendazole Granules 22.2% (222mg/g)

I use Ivomec monthly for heartworms prevention and alternate with Strongid T
and Safe-Guard!

Starting with a litter of newly born pups, I worm with Strongid T at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, & 4 weeks. I have a fecal done at 6 weeks to make sure the pups are free & clear of not just intestinal worms, but of other intestinal parasites as well.
If they are free & clear, I began giving Panacur on a monthly basis starting at the age of 4 months. If someone is giving Heartguard Plus to their pups/dogs monthly, then the deworming is done through that one tablet.
