I go mountain biking with my dog three times a week. When I ride on the public trails I keep her on a leash but when I hit the open space I take her off and she runs along side of me. Yesterday while she was off her leash she was running right behind me I would look back and check to see how far away she was and I looked back and there were two coyotes chasing her. I put my bike down and told her to come the coyotes ran past her and tripped over her and one snapped at her and got her upper nipple. I grabbed her and kicked the coyote in the face and it ran away. I took her to the vet and got her antibiotics and pain killers. My question is why would coyots just chase my dog, coyotes are pretty timid around unknowns right. I also had a medical question which I already went to the vet for but I would just like an opinon. Her nipple is filled up with some sort of fluid and is very swollen, should I take her back to the vet or wait it out?

Thanks in advance

Although Coyotes tend to be timid animals that will shy away from humans, a hungry coyote will go after anything (other animals I mean). Your dog running probably triggered a prey/predator response in the coyote thus he gave chase. There's also a chance something was off with the coyote. Just make sure your dog is utd on rabies vaccine.

As far as your dog having a problem with a nipple/mammory gland, I would definitely have a vet check it out. This is a delicate area & any kind of out of control infection, or even a tumor, would result in the dog having to have the entire chain [of mammory glands] removed as they are all connected on each side.
