The American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium sized dog that ranges in weight from 25lbs to 60lbs. Anything over 60lbs is out of standard & considered very large. The APBT body structure should resemble that more of a cross country runner/track runner with a long & lean appearance not big & bulky like that of a body builder (which aren't true athletes).

Right now your dog is a young pup. On average it takes 2 years for these dogs to fully mature.

Be back to finish in a sec......

Hmmmmm, i was just curious actually about how or why some pits are thicker & more muscular than other pits? is it the breed or are they fed something speacial to make them like that?

Ok I'm back. I was having computer issues last night.

As I was saying, it takes approx. 2 years for these dogs to fully develop & mature. Until the dog is a year old, you just need to let it be puppy. Now is the time to work on basic obedience, leash training, & just play games such as fetch. No long walks should be started until the dog is a year old, however as the dog gets closer to that age you can do 2-3 shorter walks a day & be fine. However, I do not advising running the dog nor doing any sort of weight pulling regardless of the weight. These activities will only serve to damage the joints, tendons, & ligaments.

As to why some dogs have a different size & structure that others, well that's based one 2 concepts. The first is that the APBT was & is a working breed therefore working ability comes first & looks come in second. To put it simply "form follows function". The second reason is that nowadays dogs are being bred for nothing more than color, chest size, neck size, head size, & overall body size. These breeders care nothing about the true APBT but rather strive to put out the biggest dogs out there so they can brag about their 23 inch heads all over their website.

As for your dog, his size & structure will depend primarily upon genetics. Conditioning can make a difference later on down the road, but conditioning won't make a dog bigger overall. And just remember, you don't want big & bulky, you want lean & in shape.
